how much does the speed of memory actually affect the performance of a computer from a gamers perspective. is it really worth an extra 20 bucks or so to increase that speed or is it such an uncremental difference that youd have to put too much money in it to actually see a difference.

Its not only memory that impacts on system performance. The Processor determines how fast or slow your computer responds. Especially for purposes of gaming just equip your computer with a good processor that has at least double the minimum requirement of speed on the game requirements and enough memory like 8 GB then you are good to go.
