mixing Dimm chips

Can I use a 1 gig dimm and a 2 gig dimm on a motherboard with dual channel that has only two slots if the cl is the same and clock speed is too. I want to have 3 gigs of memory.

You can so long as the voltage and timings are the same/can run the same. Its not recommended to mix and match though...
