need some opinions

i am building a gaming rig for a friend and want to just get some of your opinions on it.

Corsair TX Series TX750W
Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X4096-6400C5DHX (2x 2gb)
Sapphire HD 4870 512mb Gddr5
Asus P5Q socket 775
Seagate 7200.11 750GB
LG G-H20L-S10
NZXT Alpha Classic Series

he wants mid-heavy gaming and watching dvds and videos.

do you think a 4850 will work as well?

What kind of games is your friend planing on playing?
The 4850 is a solid card. But if you don't mind spending a little more then of course go with the 4870.

More important than what games, what resolution? The PSU if overkill but for $100 why not, that is just dirt cheap. Make sure he goes with a 64bit OS to take advantage of all the memory.

not sure what games, i will say the latest ones, (2007 and up)

not sure what screen he has, i think 22" i'm sure 650w would cover it but it was only like 15 more for the 750 so why not..

For a resolution of a typical 22" a 4850 or GTX 260 Core 212 would cover it. For 1900x1200 you would really want to go with a 4870 1GB or GTX 280.

oh, i always thought the bigger screen the more memory you needed, not so much the card. i will talk it over with my friend.

yea gtx 280 would definitely be overkill. However those gtx 260 core 216 are pretty pricey. This is a really great set of charts to check out when you are video card shopping:

at 22inches you will probably be running at 1680x1050 resolution. keep in mind that more memory is not always better. You want a good amount of fast memory and a fast gpu.

It is a bit of both. More memory is certainly beneficial for higher resolutions but the card needs to have the processing power to take advantage of it. Take a look at reviews of the 4870 1GB card to see how more memory will benefit. Dig up some reviews of the 8800GT 1GB to see where it doesn't make any difference.
