i was looking at these processors and seen they can get had for about 20 bucks on ebay, and was wondering if they are worth it two 6 cores for 40 bucks, biggest issue i see is i cannot for the life of me find a motherboard that supports them, tyans website say many models are compatable with them. thing is when you look at the specs of the motherboards they say opteron quad say nothing about supporting a 6 core processor.
the downside i see already to the processors is the motherboards that are supposedly supporting them are ~200 bucks a pop which is a big turn off to me

im looking for something to run a minecraft / nas / teamspeak / what ever else i feel like running, maybe a web server in the future. im running all this stuff on a c2d but the minecraft server is getting a warning that the computer might be overloaded or some crap like that.

so my main questions are i guess, what motherboards for sure support these cpu's and/or is there better options (bang for the buck wise) for what i need. because im at loss of comprehension when it comes to servers. lol

p.s. i didnt know if this went in the motherboard, general cpu, or amd cpu so i picked one feel free to move if u wish mod :D

You are going to have to do some digging...

...digging for motherboards that support that processor. It is an Istanbul K10 core using Socket Fr6(1207) which in general needs DDR2 registered memory and they are usually run in at least pairs on a server motherboard. Ram will not be real cheap since it is registered DDR2 and the boards will be like from Tyan and SuperMicro in general. You will not run over to the Consumer mobo section of Asus or Gigabyte and find a motherboard for those processors.

I have asked that the thread be moved to the General CPU forum section.

well this here list from tyan shows that the S8212 , Thunder n3600T, Thunder n3600M , Thunder n6650W, Thunder n3600R , all support said cpu was compatible http://www.tyan.com/support_download_cpu2.aspx?socketid=16 ,

but when you go into the specs for them on their website it says quad / dual core... http://www.tyan.com/product_SKU_spec.aspx?ProductType=MB&pid=547&SKU=600000049

ive looked up cc ram looks to be just a little more not much (2x1 gb ecc = 36.99 2x1 non ecc 28.99)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...600006107&IsNodeId=1&name=DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) ecc

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...06107 600006065&IsNodeId=1&name=2GB (2 x 1GB) non ecc
