I've picked out a few components and I just have a few questions about what I've picked about before I pull the trigger.

Here's what I have so far:

Intel Core i7-8700K
ASUS PRIME Z370-A LGA1151
https://www.amazon.com/PRIME-LGA115...pID=51eb8lMeWzL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch
Kingston Technology HyperX Fury 2666MHz DDR4 8GB

First of all, is that an ok board to go with? I know its kinda cheap, but I can't really afford to spend much more than that. Are there any drawbacks I should know about if I go with this board? Also, this motherboard says it supports Optane memory, but does that mean only the Optane caching solutions or will this board also work with something like the Optane 905p? I would like to get something like that in the future when the price drops.

Board will be just fine so long as its features/specifications meet your needs. No drawbacks I can think of.

I would skip Optane and simply buy a proper SSD or M.2 NVMe based SSD if you want that speed.

So, are you saying it does in fact support the 905p and you're just advising against that? Forgot to mention I have some old sata SSD's around the house and I was just going to use one of those until the Optane drives drop in price sufficiently.

Not sure if it does or not. The manual would tell you.

I don't believe much in optane unless you are stuck with platter drives (HDD). I'd rather get an M.2 NNVMe based drive or a regular SATA SSD drive instead.

Doesn't matter I suppose, probably wishful thinking on my part that I will be able to afford something like the Optane 905p anytime soon. Seems like kind of a bad time to buy right now, I can tell there's a chip shortage just based on the fact that most of the chips in this lineup are being sold for over MSRP and a lot of them aren't even in stock.

I lurk around a lot of forums and some people who own them swear up and down that you can feel the difference vs a flash ssd in average day to day usage and then others who have them say they don't feel any difference at all. I don't know who to believe. Makes me want to buy one and see for myself, which is what I intend to do when the price comes down to where I can afford it.

I have not looked into optane, mainly because even with nvme drives I can only see it at boot, for games and day to day usage sata is as fast as I can tell.
I have even gone back to using m.2 sata drives in my own rigs and only use nvme in high end builds for others but only because they ask for them.

i agree the difference is so small your best bet is to go with a high capacity ssd. prices are getting really good for ssd drives right now. if your patient youll find a 1tb ssd for right at $100. if you have a microcenter around you they have a $30 off cpu and mb bundle deal. you have to pick it up tho. if you know someone thats near one it may be worth it to have them pick it up for you($80 difference vs amazon). i cant believe how much the 8700k has gone up.

as for memory i would go with something gskill, corsair, crucial, patriot or team group(they all have great cs). kingstons cs is awful. something a little higher speed like these team group

patriot

g skill

and if you want rgb led mem there is this for about the same and you can always grab another 2x4 kit later on if you need it.
