Quick question about M4A79 motherboard with an AM3 cpu. what is the downside/limitation?

Currently I have the board with a X4 9850 Agena Black edition 2.5GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 2MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Processor with PC8400 (4gb).

I'm looking to upgrade the cpu to a Phenom IIX4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor

Downside is expensive soon to be outdated DDR2 RAM that will probably not drop in price when DDR3 does next. And HTREF clock limitations (imho) Anything over 235 was a "bonus" on that board and passing hte 250 range was almost impossible.

I have seen some people hit high HT REF speeds on it, I think those were earlier versions of hte board though on old BIOSes.

For a black edition CPU... its a solid board that will serve you well :)

Had that board for a year with a 940x4 , no probs...ran @3.4 folding 24/7 with water cooling on the cpu only...

well, as is, it now has phenom x4 9850 black edition with dd2 4gb pc8500

i'd like to sell off some parts and buy phenom II x4 965 black edition...guess i'll need to get rid of the ddr2 and buy ddr3

would 4gb ddr of kingston hyperX 1333 work well here?

i think i'll ebay off my 9850 x4, 4x1gb ddr2 pc8500 (hyperx) and 2x1gb of pc3500LL from corsair. that should give me enough to offset the costs of the 965 and ddr3

If I install DDR3 in this board, will it be fully used? I don't know much about the AM2+ boards. Somehow they work with DDR2 and DDR3, but is the memory used to its full potential in THIS board.

ah, i'm thinking of the ASUS M4A79-T instead of the M4A79. Better swap out the boards then.
