Hey guys , since the new R9 series has launched.
Currently Im running on a Sapphire HD 7870 2GB Ghz Edition OC which is the Pit Cairn not the Tahiti
Im thinking is the new Sapphire R9-280X Toxic be a good upgrade

I wonder are you guys aware for the Sapphire's R9-280X Toxic Edition.
But this card really can kick some *** It even come close to a GTX 780
Reference Card.

Now Im aware that in the US the old HD 7970 are cheaper ( It's what I heard at least ) but the new 280x Toxic here is being sold here for only RM 1289 (422$) while the old HD 7970 Ghz Edition OC and Vapor-X are being sold for RM 1299 (425$) and RM 1385 (454$)

While even after NVIDIA Price Cut

Palit GTX 780 SUPER JETSTREAM 3GB - RM 2099 (688$)
Palit GTX 770 JETSTREAM 2GB / 4GB - RM 1299 / 1459 (425$ / 478$)

Around same for other brands too like MSI / GIGABYTE / ASUS / GAINWARD etc

TBH , the price for the new 280X Toxic from Sapphire is a really sweet price and it's within my reach TBH ( Specially being a TOXIC Edition )
My biggest question about " Is it worth upgrading " is because the fact that it is still a HD 7000 series basically. Even though this 280X Toxic Edition is lot stronger than the previous HD 7970 / other 280X , but even so how much longer it can actually kick ***. For example like back then when Battlefield 3 was like the best graphic game , everyone struggles to play it at Ultra and all are using this as a Benchmark to build their beast rig.
Not much longer Crysis 3 came out and wipe the floor with it.

So is the 280X Toxic more " future proof " or Im better off saving the money and pray for a new generation GPU from AMD

Im still very curios about the price and performance of the R9-290
290X is totally not within my reach for it's price.

I would save some more money and wait.

From a 7870 to a 280x/7970 is not enough to justify the bucks spent IMO.

Wait for the 290, or grab a used 780. With the recent nVidia price cut, I am sure some will sell pretty soon for as low as $400 or less.

I only been recently started to build my own rig, this is my first time seeing brand doing a re-brand of their GPU.

Since back then 5000 - 7000 series are all new generations for ea.

Since now both NVIDIA and AMD only recently re-brand their GPU , how long do you think they will release a new generation of GPU again ?

290x and 290 are new tech.

780, 780ti and titan are also new tech compared to 6xx and 760/770.

NVidia plans on launching maxwells GPU Q1 2014 IIRC.

Sadly 290X is not within my reach , well it's around double of the 280X...but maybe it will be in my reach if I save up some money longer.

I think the best strategy now to take is just wait and see

I dunno about that R9 280X.
It behaves like the 7970Ghz cards, which are faster than any 7870.
You can always wait ofcourse, but the difference between 7870 is bigger than 7950 versus 7970.

The plain 290 could be a real worhty upgrade, but if you can afford it is something else. It will certainly outlive your current system.
Anyway, I don't plan in upgrading my system, but I read some story about the plain 290 and it certainly got my interest.
So maybe next month you have a clearer picture of what you want.
Goodluck.

8800-9800 = re-brands
400-500 = sorta improved re-brands of a sort.
7870-270x - rebrand
7970-280x - rebrand
680-770 - rebrand
670-760 Ti rebrand
660ti-760 rebrand
660-750 ti rebrand

They're all doing it, but the real question is, is this a big problem? not really so long as the prices drop is my opinion.

and to answer your question. i think you would be better off looking for a used 780gtx at this point like said above you may be able to snag one for $400-ish soon and that would be worth your effort.

An overclocked 7870 can reach/surpass stock 280x performance now that doesn't mean it can beat a oc'd 280x but truly there isn't a whole ton more to gain for you'r purchase.

going up a generation is a much better option for you. perhaps the 290 non x will be in the 400ish range that may also be a good option for you.

As I suspected then , I think it's best wait for the 290 to be launch and see what's the performance and pricing.

290X might be within my reach but maybe least after 6 Months or even a Year total for my Salary is low as hell !

(300$ ++ Per Month , not included other expenses)

Since R9-290X has launch , Benchmarks are shown. From a rough estimation , how long do you guys think this card can actually last before games starting to bring it down to it's knees.

From my experience I doubt it won't be long since there are games I never imagine the graphical demanding power is so high like Crysis 3 !

until then oc your 7870 a bit and use the best of what its capable of.

Speak of the Devil !
Today the R9-290 reviews just came in !
This one is from eTeknix !
MSRP is about 399$ even so it's still cheaper than both GTX Titan and GTX 780 and yet this baby beats the hell out of both Titan and GTX 780 and as like the 7950 and 7970 , the 290 sits nicely just below the 290X !

But as always , everything in my country is bit more overpriced.
So I expecting after the card being shipped over here and equipped aftermarket cooler etc

I think the pricing be around least 500 - 600$ flat. Even so it's still 88$ cheaper than the GTX 780 and around 700$ cheaper than the Titan !

GTX Titan Reference = 1100$
GTX Titan Aftermarket = 1200 - 1300$

My country's pricing Logic ! It's a ***** , ain't it
