One other thing i'm still interested in doing although I'm not sure how visible it would be on the inside (very on the outside) are the self adhesive sheets that you can cut to shape and apply. Have any experience with that? I think i remember 3M having some although I'm not sure if it adheres well to the steel.

I don't, but you should be able to get a huge roll of the stuff on McMaster.
