Since I did this for myself, I thought I'd share it for those who are interested
I switched recently from 2x512 Mushkin XP4000 Redline 2-2-2 to 4x512.
I ran some benchmarks to compare it with Mushkin Redline XP4000 2x1Gb (my numbers come from a review on cdrinfo.com).
Not a perfect comparison, as the CPU speed differ and I don't own the 2x1Gb therefore rely on a published test.
But I think I can safely say that if you already have 2x512 of good (mushkin is great) RAM, you don't necessarily have to sell it and buy a 2x1Gb. Buying an additional 2x512 of the same yields roughly the same performance, and the 2T drop in performance is not so dramatic.
