After about 4 years out of the oc game, i finally decided to step back up to the plate and picked up some new gear. My how things have changed in 4 years

Here's what i picked up :
Asus M3A79-T Deluxe
AMD Phenom 9850 black
Corsair 6-6-6-18 2T 2x2GB
HIS HD 4850 512MB

After taking one look at the AMD OD app and doing one of these -> :bang head to my keyboard(what ever happened to the simple FSB x Multi + vcore ), i decided to give this video card ocing racket a try (we didnt have this option way back when...)

So i got RT 2.2 with the 8.11 drivers setup and let the fan rip for a bit, got a stable idle temp of 37C, i would have thought these things would run hotter than that? I used FurMark and 3DMark 06 to run some initial tests, at stock speeds(625/933) and running FurMark on 1680x1050 8xAA for 20 min temps topped out around 52C, with that in mind, i started to crank things up a notch!

My initial stepups were done completly with FurMark, i ran two tests, 1680x1050 8xAA and 1280x1028 4xAA with the following results (in min/max/avg fps)
700/1100 - 13/24/19 and 25/40/30
725/1125 - 16/28/20 and 26/43/31

Temps for these runs were in the 58-61C range. At the 725/1125 i noticed a bit of fragmentation, but only in the progress bar, and minimal at that. Above these speeds the fragmenting was a little more pronounced and 750/1200 it crashed after 45 seconds. I wasnt sure what to make of the temps, wether 60+ was high, or there was still breathing room, maybe i just need a little more juice for the chip (looking into the bios mod atm).

Of course, things changed quite drastically when i went to run 3dmark, very drastic actually. My first set of runs at stock got me 10.8k and 11.7k for 1680 and 1280 resolution with no AA. Seeing as the the 3dmark app seems to have a bit more involved processing i decided not to jump the gun and started with a 650/1025, which ran ok. After that i had nothing but problems.

With 1680 resolution it would not complete the GPU Test 4 bench at 675/933 but ran fine upto 670/1100, 675 core crashed flat out, and anything above 1100 mem had massive fragmentation in Test 4. Take test 4 out of the equation and i could get upto 685/1115 before it started crashing/fragmenting bad in all the GPU tests, not really what i was hoping for, but not bad for a first run i suppose.

BTW, i did manage to squeeze out about 12.4k 3dmarks @ 1280x1024 @ 690/1115 with only minimal fragmenting, but pushing it any more than that just crashed 3dmark back to the desktop.

Since i normally run at 1680x1050 (my monitors preferred resolution) i'll take that as my benchmark, which i could get 670/1100, looking at some of the other clock speeds i've seen, im guessing my gpu definetly has some room to go up, do i just need a touch more voltage to get past the crash point of 675? or is there something else im missing?

One other thing i noticed, is that i did have a small problem with frame stuttering in all the benchmarks at 1680x1050. About once/second it seemed to stutter over a frame or two, but in between it seemed fairly smooth. You only really notice it when the camera is moving quickly. And it did this no matter the clock speeds, even underclocked.

I'll play around with that bios mod a bit later, supposedly i can get it from the 1.0 - 1.5 just by browsing through RBE. Gotta make sure i have a PCI vid card kickin around somewhere in case the flash fails first.

One thing that helps that weird studder is a program like RivaTuner polling temps/clocks etc, or even GPU-Z (I've never noticed it with GPU-Z). I've never personally seen this but I've heard it's the fix.

My first 4850 barely did 680/1050 stable.

I believe your HIS 4850 has a better heatsink than the reference one...most of the 4850's that came with the reference have very high idle/load. Good choice.

If your wanting to compare 3DMark06 scores with most people, ya gotta leave the default resolution/AA/AF settings to the program. With one 4850 and my CPU @ 4.5, I managed to break 15k. I believe I was clocked at 800/1200 (volt modded).

Enjoy the card :D
