xmms (redhat 8.0)

im running redhat 8.0.....and the soundcard im running is soundblaster live. Im trying to play mp3 on xmms....it seems to run through the song and the equilizer is moving....but no sound. The sound card is installed and i can play *.wav files....im not quite sure why this is so ?

I seen a post liek this before, I think you need to install the codec to play mp3s ?

Yes, I believe that Red Hat 8.0 and 9 both disable MP3s. The solution is to download the full version of XMMS, complete with MP3 support. You can download it here:

i've installed the *.tar ver. of xmms but still no sound.....you think i have to install a mp3 codec....should'nt it come with one ???

Yes, it should, but RedHat are being very...responsible...because of their size and avoiding any difficulty with Fraunhaufer (sp?), who own the codec.

Try the one that they use on this site http://www.gurulabs.com/downloads.html its the XMMS download for redhat 8.0 and 9.0 I had the same problem till I used that file.

thanks alot guys for the info.....i dl the xmms 8/9 with mp3 support from xmms.org and it's working fine.
