I have been reading many articles and forums all day for help with my new computer, but I have come to the conclusion that I need to ask for some specific help.
I have just finished building a new computer with the following specs:
Case: Aspire X-Dreamer II
Mobo: DFI LanParty 875Pro
CPU: Pentium IV 2.8C
RAM: 512x2 Corsair sticks
Vid: Radeon 9600 non-pro 256 (soon being upgraded to 9800pro 128)
Pwr: Antec True-Blue 480W PSU
HD: Samsung 160Gb 7200RPM SATA
Optical: Samsung combo DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive
My problem lies in cooling and case fans. I am using the stock 80mm case fans that came with it (there are 2, one in the top of the case and one in the side window next to CPU) and I want to boost the airflow of this rig.
Now don't get me wrong, there is nothing WRONG with my current setup. I overclocked from 2.8 to 3.2 at the press of a button and it still runs around 45 C. To me this is a very acceptable level... but I want more. I put my hand over either casefan and feel almost NO air coming out, yet the board and chip still stay pretty cool.
I do not currently have the money for any options other than air-cooling (I'll cross that bridge when I come to it), so I am looking at fan options to increase the airflow to cool off this rig.
A couple things I have noticed:
-- The stock case fans don't FEEL like they're putting out much air, yet everything stays fairly cool.
-- There are two additional fan slots in the back panel of the case above the PCI slots (the normal spot for rear fans) that are as of yet unoccupied.
-- There is a grille on the bottom front of the case which I assume is the only air intake this case has. I do NOT want to mess with the case much to get good air intake, but I realize that it needs "something." Unfortunately this is my first time undertaking such a project and have no idea "what" that something is.
-- The two casefans both have MOLEX connectors, not the 3-pin standard fare I'm used to. Both are plugged into a distinctive line from the PSU that says "Fan Only."
My concerns:
-- I have a suspicion that the air intake from the front of my case can be greatly improved, I just don't know how much work and/or money it would take.
-- I have heard that fans with 3-pins that plug directly into the motherboard can get higher speeds than those using MOLEX's. Is this true?
-- I want to fill those two rear fan slots, and if necessary, upgrade the fans on the side and top of the case, to maximize airflow.
So far I have successfully overclocked the CPU up to 3.5 with even the stock fans, but it is a LITTLE bit unstable at that speed and occasionally crashes, and going any higher is instant crash.
I would appreciate any and all advice the experienced OC'ers here could provide, and thanks in advance!
Oh, and one side note: if you would like to recommend me some fans, I am kind of looking for something with a blue LED glow to accentuate the existing LED's on the PSU and Case.
Please if there are any details I have left out, let me know, I would be happy to correct them.
