I can get all of my OS and programs and stuff installed on 10-15 gigs, the rest would be used for data files and downloads. It really depends on what you are doing. I've seen people do image editing with lots of quality where 3 images could easily take up 6 gigs. i have roughly this much, 360gb of anime, 110gb of mp3's, and quite a bit of other stuff the rules of this forum prohibit me from talking about(no not porn). since my recent addition i have about 230gb free out of 950 if i would of held off from adding my most recent HD iw ould have about a gig of free space.
edit: also, having a 40gb HD and burning stuff to CD's as you DL is weak, humor me

Why don't you just buy a dvd burner. instead of buying 120gig hdds, and burn them on dvds. Keeps your computer from slowin down and saves money
