Just to add a point, perhaps one should say socket A was the AMD platform. They've moved onto another socket design with their 64 bit processors.

Color :)

Number of pins (462/478), layout of pins (including what they're connected to). These differences mean that different processors go in each socket. AMD has used socket A (462) for Athlon Thunderbird, Athlon-XP (all cores), ad Duron. Socket 478 is used currently for Intel P4 Northwood core processors (were there any socket 478 willys? or was that just the othe P4 socket?). Athlon 64s will use socket 754, athlon FX will use socket 940, then 939, and Opteron will use socket 940.

Yes there were (are for Luta ;) ) socket 478 Willys. Intel made the transition right about the time they released the then fastest 2GHz Willy, which came in both socket 423 and socket 478 formats. The Northwoods were only ever socket 478.

The willy celerons are also 478 pins.
