As everyone knows, the HAF X comes with 2 USB 3.0 cable that go in the back of the Motherboard to 2 USB 3.0 ports. Here's my situation. My board doesn't have USB 3.0 so currently I'm using the 2 USB 2.0 headers that go directly in my board. I'm receiving a card reader that comes with a USB header to 3 USB ports on the reader. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820223113

My question is will plugging those 2 USB 3.0 cables into a 2 USB 2.0 ports work? The reason is by doing this it would free up one USB header allowing me to plug in the card reader USB ports. I don't need all the USB ports but it will really bug me having ports that don't work. I could try it myself but it's a lot of work and I would have to tear out a lot of things so I'd like to hear you guys if you think it would work.
