I am wondering wether to get the s754 sempron 2800+ 64bit at 1.6 ghz 256 l2 cache or the 2800+ 64bit 1.8ghz 512 l2 cache. I will be wanting to oc eather one to 2.6ghz using a dfi nforce 3 250gb mobo and a xp 90 heatsink. THe differnce between the processors in about 50dollars canadian. I am wondering if they will overclock about the same amount and if the extra 50 bucks is worth 256 more cache and 200mhz faster stock. Also which would use less power. Thankz

The Athlon 64 is based on older 754 cores, it may overclock less than the new E6 revision 754 Sempron.

So it may be that for $50 less, you'll get a higher overclocked, faster system.

Just make sure it's an E6 Sempron.

OK ive heard this before and yes i belive its a E6 sempron. Froman article ive read even a 2600+ semp 64 with only 128 cache ocd and ran great at 2.6ghz performing just as good as a p4 3.4e. The cache made a slight difference in games but 100fps vs 90 isnt gonna make me want to spend 200 more to get a 939 board with a 64bit. ill just be happy with something that wont bottleneck my car severly and allow me to run it properly for under 300(canadian, please dont say the words newegg)

Go with the E6 Sempron and invest the savings into other components. Good luck.

To answer one of your other questions, the Sempron would use less power because it is 90nm, while the Athlon64 is 130nm.

I have the Sempron64 3000+, which has 128KB L2 cache, and it oced to roughly 2.6GHz on stock cooling, and 2.75GHz stable with a Thermaltake Big Typhoon hsf. My performance is close to other Athlon64s clocked about the same as mine.

If you are not OC then Athlon64 2800+ is much better choise . But if you want to OC sempron64 is based on Venice E6 core revision and you will hit much much higher freqs than with s.754 athlon64.
