While I'm not an expert by anymeans on RAM I would think it would have to do with the density of the resistors in the RAM. The higher the density the more efficient the ram will be. Atleast thats what I think. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable with chime in
One problem. The chipset has x number of address lines to the RAM. If the memory module contains more RAM per rank than can be addressed with these lines ...
