One of my friends is wanting to build a new gaming rig. His budget is around $1,000 for a chip, board, vga, psu, ram, and case. He showed me he wanted the 8800GTX for around $450. I said I thought that maybe he would be better off with just the 8800GT. His monitor is a 27 or 32" Polaroid lcd tv from Wal-Mart so I don't think the resolution can go that high.

What card would he be best off with? All he really is going to do is game.

8800GT - $200
8800GTS - $250
8800GTX - $450

or...

3870 - $190
3870X2 - $440

Is the new 3870X2 better than the GTX for the same price?

All good choices, the 8800GT, 8800GTS 512, 3870, and 3870x2 are fantastic choices. I'd stray from the GTX with these other options that are available. Yes the x2 is faster the 8800GTX, but hard to say at lower reses.

He wants to get one now and one later for SLI. I think he is just better off with one GTS and a P35 board instead of a XFX 680i.

Then the GT, I have only one and it kicks a** and takes names at 1920x1200, it should be plenty in sli.

A 27 or 32" Polaroid LCD TV (not monitor) is at best 1366x768. No need for SLI, or a super card for that rez.

Does he plan on upgrading his monitor? If not, then I wouldn't go higher than the 8800GT, and I'd definitely stay far away from SLI. Go P35.

Oh yeah, good catch. Hey, even my 8600gts ran well at 1280x1024 with a slight jump in clock speeds.

Lilbuddy, suggest to your friend to get a 8800GT and spend the remaining $$ on a higher res screen. Just an idea.
