well I have been talking to the wife about building a new puter and her first question was always..why? and then how much? and then why again? hehe

I really had to try another tact on it...so im going to give the old one to my mother. this received the ohh what a great idea, but what are you going to use she said? well ill havta use our laptop, which is to say...her laptop. ohhhhh she said, well why don't you build a new one she asked? what a beautifully perfect idea honey I said. and there you have it, done!

so the first thing I have to do is come up with my specs.

general start:

OC ability, gaming-yes, fun please.

latest AMD CPU..looks like not a 9 series since it seems that its just the 8 series really?, sorry I just refuse to put premium cash down for intel.
Start with one vid...but eventually go to 2.
water cool...
ssd and raid

I wont be buying it all at once so I will buy a few items at a time, this creates a small priority issue in that will a new series come out before I finish? (always seems to be the case anyway)

any suggestions or advice is always welcome.

Price? Hmm we'll given it'll be over a duration it can be higher, but tentatively 3k.
And definately custom wc.

Here's a starting point for that build, I did splurge a little on some parts

CPU - AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz 8-Core $179.99
Motherboard - Asus SABERTOOTH 990FX/GEN3 R2.0 ATX AM3+ $199.99
Memory - Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 $154.99
Video Card - -Galaxy GeForce GTX 780 3GB $649.99
Case - Corsair C70 Military Green (Green) ATX Mid Tower $99.99 (was going for a rugged military look on this build:salute:)
Power Supply - Corsair 850W ATX12V / EPS12V $149.99 (Their are cheaper ones out their, but this one is very quiet)
Operating System - Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (OEM) (64-bit)

Now this is at 1522.67, with such a high budget I would go with Intel, but that's just me
This leaves you plenty of room to get whatever drives you would want and plenty of water cooling. For the water cooling parts refer to the stickies and start your research! Is their any color scheme you would prefer if so I can change the build around, I have nothing to do at work

Blue , yeah research is key. Vid card is def a place to splurge on. I'm gonna havto look seriously at Intel. I went GB on my MB before, cause I like the dual bios but I didn't really research the mem as well as I should have. I am using ati ATM. Do you prefer the gforce over redeon?

And thx man, this is just the beginning of course, it's appreciated.

I personally prefer amd for my gfx, but until more is released on the r290"x", I don't want to recommend it. Also if you do go intel I have the ga-z87x-ud3h board and it works great!
Here's another build with Intel, this would be my build if I had your budget:D
Also do you plan on water cooling your gpus? If so you might want to get an evga one with the waterblock

CPU- Intel 4770K Quad-Core $279.99
Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD3H ATX LGA1150 $139.99
Memory - Corsair Dominator Platinum 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 $184.25
Video Card - Galaxy GeForce GTX 780 3GB $649.99
Case Corsair - 750D ATX Full Tower $139.99
Power Supply - Corsair 860W ATX12V / EPS12V $179.99
Operating System - Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (OEM) (64-bit) $87.98
Totals 1662.68

Tweaked, there is an issue with this statement, that a lot of people do not realize. First off let me state that I own both Intel and AMD rigs. The issue is this, the new Fx processors ie Fx 6xxx and 8xxx series in particular are very demanding chips. They require stout motherboards in order to efficiently provide the proper voltage to the Cpu, especially when overclocked. They also generate a tremendous amount of heat. When you compare the parts you'll need to build a Amd system to an Intel as a whole, if you want to do it right. The Intel is not going to be that much more expensive. Now if you are already planning on building a custom WC setup you can take that out of the equation. I say this because, most of us that OC these Fx 8XXX Cpu's eventually build one because Air just doesn't cut it with these chips. Additionally, as the above posts state, running CFX/Sli on an Intel setup has been shown to outperform an AMD one. I took a quick look on NewEgg and compared an AMD mobo/cpu setup on the Sabertooth mobo, which is one of the boards I'd choose to run a Fx 8350 on. To an I5 4670k and an Asus Z87 board, the price difference is about $10.00. Furthermore, if it is for gaming you don't need an I7 4770k.

We'll I was one of those mandrake. Interesting read. Educational as we'll.
while I will be gaming on it, I want to OC as well. I have some research to do on this.
Ok, so a quick question:
As I have not delved into integrated graphics, and it seems that it's the thing now, do we gain anything by using integrated and discrete? Or just stick with cards for graphics? And btw, leaning to Intel ATM. Made me realize that I need to touch these things to see for myself.

Thanks guys.

It begins.

For what you want to use this build for Intel 4670k will suite you very well. I can OC my 4670k to 4.6ghz with 1.28v and stay under 65c with an h100. The performance you get out of a 4670k is oustanding compared to 8350 and as mentioned before to OC a 8350 you need a good mobo to handle the voltage. when all summed they cost between intel and amd is marginal at best when looking at overclocking the chip. You might want to look at 7970ghz edition gpu's I recently bought an asus hd7970 dc2 for $259 and it does very well on all new titles. Bf4 took a hit on ultra and averaged 41fps but I can live with that for only spending half the cost of a 780.

Amd has it's niche. So does intel. I just didn't want to spend a lot more and to get a toy for 200 vs 1k, suited me at the time. Things are different now, and some understanding as well.

You want a system that's mainly going to be used for gaming and basic surfing/video/audio/productivity right?

You aren't doing anything heavily multithreaded that would need 8 cores? (Not that AMD modules are actual cores. Two cores share one set of resources on FX chips), then you should go Intel.

The CPU will cost you $30-50 more, depending on where you shop. If you live near a Microcenter you can get a CPU/MOBO combo and save a bunch of cash.

It's not significantly more expensive to go Intel for a gaming build, and you get a much better system which is better suited to the needs gaming places on a CPU. No game uses more than 4 threads that I know of. An 8350 would have half the CPU sitting dead while a 4670K would be running all four cores.

Ok, getting there on specs...buuuuutttt.

Liquid cooling yet to be assembled. (still researching atm) and atm just thinking on the CPU for WC, then chipset and then down the road add another setup for vid card.

Yes, MB is way more than I need, but I like it and also trying to future proof as best I can. and well, it gives me the opportunity to do anything I want in the future.

I may go for faster ram down the road but gota check the list for the mb...its on my list...lol

Any considerations I have overlooked or neglected?

You do not need a 1000 watt power supply for your setup. I would stick to 750 watt psu if you plan on going crossfire later down the road. A corsair tx750 is a really solid unit that you will never have an issue with.

Ok, got the WC portion spec'd. Have a look and lemme know if ok. Cooling the cpu and will OC.

You sure you're going to use everything that $300 board has to offer? Most people won't. You can achieve the same overclocks (on water) on any number of $130-150 boards out there.

Just so you know, though it may be controversial, is that you don't use silver coils with nickel blocks. Mixed metals issues.

Hmm good point on the silver coil and thx. Hey noob, yeah I won't use it all, but I'll be able to when I and if I want to. I could save a bit for sure. Thanks man.
