400+ P4's At Our Disposal!!!

By all means take your time. You don't want to rush this. Sure, the sight of 400+ P4's crunching away would be enough to bring a tear to any Folders' eye, but this should be about the science (points won't hurt though). *thinks for a minute* Maybe you could talk to the SysAdmin to kinda get a feel for how competitive he is. If he's got a streak in hin, maybe you should play up the points angle (tell him he'll get to the top of the team in no time). I dunno though, I'd prolly downplay the points unless I knew for a fact that it would draw him in. Good luck with it!

jcw, I wrote an entire paper about grid computing for my technical writing class last year. Let me know if you'd like to read it.

Getting the sysadmin online if a great idea. If the principal tried to just dictate it down to him, he may come up with every ridiculous technological concern just to scuttle it.

Not sure I'd play to his competitive side though. If he's got one like I do (also an IT specialist, at a college) he'd say, 'great idea!' and load his own nick/team in the config. Great for science... not so good for your team!

May I suggest for the presenation that it be between 10-15 minutes at the max, but have enough info in case he gets TEH BUG and wants to know everything. Make it really clean, maybe print out a graph or two. It would be really awesome and impressive if you had a clean cut PowerPoint presentation, on a laptop or in a room with a projector. It would show the big guy that you have put your time into it and that you are serious about it, not just a quick idea.
Good luck! Presentation seems to be everything when talking with people who know very little about it.
Make sure you give documentation on the papers released by stanford as a result of F@H, and that you dont just say, "it can hlepz c4nz0rz!"...... may I suggest a statement along the lines of, "It's computations on a computer to figure out how protiens fold and mis-fold, which has scientific relations to alzheimers and cancer and many other diseases."

and above all, Good luck! May teh f0ld be wid j00.

Regarding points, I don't think I'll mention it at all.

First off the points don't really amount to anything, they have no actual worth or monetary value so I don't see why I should even be mentioning they will be going to our team.

Well I'm nearing the revision and editing stage...

Shall I post up my presentation and let you guys give some comments/thoughts about it?

Maybe mentioning something about teams. Then something about the team your on. So they know from the start about it.

They might like to be part of a team right off the bat.:)

It looks good! Also what about getting permission from short media to show their flash video?

Nice work, when you get the final copy finished can I use it for the college I'm transferring to next fall? I'm sure they'll go for it:D

Yeah I've thought about that video, I'll hop over to Short Media sometime and check with them. Thx for the idea!

Nah, teams are honestly of no actual importance to the project. What I mean is if there were no teams, just one big input system for F@H, there wouldn't be a difference in project performance really.

I think mentioning of teams and points is only nessesary if I get this project rolling, or if needed.

actualy mentioning points solely to make your principle think hey our school is going to be recognised as helping with this project. basicly tell him that each computer will report that it is working for (insert school name) and will be recognised for it. this could get them motivated so they can show it off.

eg well my school donated 20,000 work units to help cure cancer last year what have you done to help the world bob?

that may not happen but the recognition aspect could definatly help sell the idea if your principle has any sence of pride. and with stanford having the live generated certificates you could even furnish proof of how the project is going periodicly to show that its actualy doing something.

Well give the team thing some thought. Its what motivated my folding. I wanted to help Team 32. I enjoy the competition and the stats help motivate me.

Hmm...great point! Thinking this over, there are some advantages and disadvantages:

Good-Getting recognized
Good-Each individual computer could have a folding name, to easily track individual progress, but that's sort of pointless
Bad-Creating our own team, and not folding for T32!! That's a big one for me because I wanted this to not just be for F@H and my school, but for Team 32 also...not sure what I'll do but I'll definately keep your thoughts in mind.

I may reconsider it because of ssjwizard's thoughts about recognition, thx.

Update! Meeting w/ Principle is pending scheduling...she was not at school today, so I had a note left for her asking if we could meet next Wednesday after school.

Thanks nikhsub, I wasn't asking for grammatical corrections, but Ill definately use your corrections since I'm not excellent at grammar (writing wise). Thanks.

Human variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease
vCJD is caused by prions (proteins) similar to those that cause BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) commonly referred to as mad cow disease.
humans get vCJD cows get BSE.

The strange misshapen prion proteins can be passed by eating infected meat.

The result of the infection is a chronic wasting disease.

ALS
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
is what prof. Stephen Hawking has it is similar to Motor Neurone Disease

i think that breaking down the computers to individual systems would make an increased workload and not be of interest to the admins and principal. i wouldnt nessicarily push the teams side but meerly the points. just use the school name as 1 user account as a borg cluster for team 32 they need not know what team 32 stands for as its fairly un important. and this will also simplify the notion of keeping a running score on how much your school can produce.

Sounds like a reasonable idea, that's hopefully what I'll be doing.

Sounds good. Don't forget to mention that when the computer runs the calculations, that it uses the spare proccessor cycles and that normal functions are un-affected. If she doesnt have to ask that question, then she won't be pondering whether or not to start the project based on that info.
Good job!
