Hey guys! I've been looking into overclocking my CPU recently and I was wondering if I could run a few things by you guys.

Right now I have:
Prime95
AMD Overdrive
CPUID Hardware Monitor

What I'm trying for is the simplest overclock possible seeing as I am new to this whole thing. My motherboard is a Gigabyte880GMA-USB3.

Right now I am stress-testing with stock voltage (looking to keep stock voltage) at 3.6 GHz and I'm getting conflicting CPU temperatures on my separate programs. CPUIDHW is telling me that my resting temp is about 37 C while AMDOD says around 48.5 C. Additionally, when stress-testing with Prime95 (altough I've only done it for a few minutes at a time), CPUIDHW is telling me that my CPU temperature is about 60 C while AMDOD says 75 C.

What kind of temperature is safe for this CPU?

I am not very confident in my knowledge in this area, hence why I am not running Prime95 for any lengthy period of time. I was wondering if someone could help me sort out this discrepancy and maybe lead me where I'm trying to go. (Maybe some suggestions from other Phenom x4 995 owners etc.) Thank you guys SO much. You've all already been such a huge help to me just by reading previous posts!

Welcome to the forums, for starters could you give a breakdown of the system components. Are you using the stock heatsink? Resting temp seems a little high aswell as either one of those temps at load. Usually 55 is as high as you want to get 62 is max. You should also download cpu-z. What are you using to overclock, a windows based program or the BIOS? You should be using the bios. Here are a few guides you should read.

What exact components are you referring to? I am using stock everything. The max temps according to CPUID are 57 C but the AMD editor I am using is telling me 70 C.

Look at the signature at the bottom of my post, knowing what your setup is helps us help you figure out why you are running the temps you are showing. You said stock everything so I'm assuming that you are using the stock heatsink. I never tried to OC mine with it so I'm not sure how far you will be able to go with it. Right now you are pretty much at the limit. If your budget allows it you should probably pick up a good aftermarket heatsink such as the Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVo or nzxt havik 120.

I also opened amd overdrive on my pc and the core temps that I see are exactly the same as the core temps on my hwmonitor. I'm not really sure why you are seeing such a discrepancy between the two.

ekimissarg, when referring to temps you need to distinguish between "core" temp and CPU temp (which is actually the CPU socket temp taken from a sensor in the motherboard). With HWMonitor, the CPU temp might be disguised as one of the TMPINx lines. Core temps are the critical ones. When overclocking you want to limit them to around 55c.
