Leave the mesh. It's wide so it barely hurts airflow.

Faceplate meet OCF, OCF meet faceplate.
Its taken 2 days to cut and file by hand, about 5 hours of real work. Its still not 100% finished, I need to clean up the Top and bottom coner edges as you can see, and I still need to make the brackets to hold it in. I just couldn't wait to share.

The faceplate is looking fantastic... you are obviously taking your time and doing some fine quality work. 
In regards to the rear fan ordeal, its really your call. I'm sure you could find some sort of edging or silicone or something if you felt the need to fill that small gap.
