The APUs are limited in selection with what they will pair with. Llano APUs will work in Dual Graphics using a 64xx-67xx card, and Im not sure on the models for the Trinity APUs but it will be 7xxx series stuff probably topping off with the 7670. In games that are capable of supporting the dual graphics mode receive a pretty sizable improvement in performance. The initial drivers at APU launch didnt work to well and some titles lost FPS, but I have not observed this behavior since 12.1 released.

For those of us looking to pair the APUs with a discrete GPU card, theres a bench by AnandTech - link below.

I was thinking of doing the same, however Anand's bench suggested otherwise.

APUS paired with a HD5870:

If we're looking to use the IGP, results are favourable to APUs.

The APU in your case will only be useful as a cpu. The APU will not link up in hybrid crossfire to a 5870 so the a10 is essentially a fx-4170 without a L3 cache.

Indeed, if your planing to use a more powerful GPU then you really shouldn't even be looking at the APUs.
