Witchdoctor : OK so here is the thing - there are no pins either on the MB or the CPU. Its all just flat contact pads. Nothing is sticking out. I read on some website that thats how the new Skylakes are. Is that true?

LGA sockets all have pins in them, what you see as pads on the socket is pins. Get a high power magnifier and look, you will see pins like in the pic below.

And as you can see, a few pins on this socket got damaged. I hate LGA sockets, I killed a $750.00 server board with LGA sockets on it, bent a few pins.
 
Wroong CPU??

Stupid question but are you sure you have the right CPU?
I purchased a i5-6700K but received i7-7600K.
Not realizing it was GEN7 CPU not GEN6 i spent 2 days switching parts,
just to realize my CPU was GEN7.

Just a thought..:shock::confused:
