+1 for high end air over CLC.
Generally quieter, cooler, cheaper and more dependable.. no pump to worry about.

Big air it is then. I've really started to like the Silver Arrow SB-E (not extreme). Although I'm unsure if it will fit without blocking my first PCI slot (vid card mounted here). I can't move the vid card to another slot without losing the ability to use my sound card (I only have one slot that accepts it.

Bamato

Don't know if this is too big or not.

SilverStone Heligon HE02 reviewed at Xbit labs.

It is asymmetric - apparently you can "turn" it so it doesn't block slots or interfere with ram. It is big however and designed to run fanless.

Interesting. I worry about going passive though. I know I've got decent airflow in my case, but I'm not sure it would be good enough for something like that.

You could always figure out a way to put a fan on it. Saw a review where there was just enough room for the heatsink and a fan (140mm I think) mounted on the rear of the case.

Think it was Tom's hardware - I can find it if you like.

Silver Arrow SB-E coolers are all the same. SE and Extreme are not as wide because they do not have the 168mm wide TY-150 middle fan.

If the distance from PCI slot to middle of CPU is more than half of the cooler width it will fit (SA SB-E = 155mm wide divide by 2 = 77.5mm PCI slot to middle of CPU). Just make sure they fan clips don't interfere.. or insulate them so they don't short out on back of GPU. ;)

Maybe this will help.

*cooler base to bottom fin. (add 8mm for motherboard to bottom fin.)
**fins are at 3 different levels

K2, D14 & TC14 are about same except for TC14 140mm fans & 31mm RAM clearance stack up to 171mm (my R2 is 165mm clearance and TC14 fits)

SB-E is widest by 15mm. Even wider with TY-150 fan = 170.

Extreme with TY-143 fans is still 151.5mm wide.

Looking at motherboard with CPU socket on right, I/0 sockets at back and PCI slots from left side of board the right side of 7th slot is 158mm from right side of board. All ATX are the same PCI slot placement.

From left side to right side of 1st slot is 25mm; 2nd slot is 45mm; 3rd = 66mm, 4th = 86mm; 5th = 107; 6th = 127; 7th = 147mm. Total board = 305 - 147 = 158mm. Math checks out !

6th PCI slot is usually the top GPU slot.

Phanteks PH-TC14PE:
Fan clips protrude 4mm plus 70mm from centerline = 74mm.
Thermalright Silver Arrow SB-E is 170mm wide because TY-150 is 168mm wide.
Thermalright Silver Arrow SB-E Extreme is 155mm because it uses 2x TY-143 which are 151mm wide.

So I've got a better chance of fitting the Extreme in there than the standard SBE... Am I reading the dimensions on the fans correctly? The TY-143's are just as tall as the TY-141?

On second thought, sound matters to me.

Looks like I'm leaning towards the Phanteks at the moment. And the Phanteks are ~$20 less expensive.

Appreciate the help so far everyone.

TY-140, 141, 143, 145 & 147 are all the same size in same housing with 2 slightly different blade designs and 2 different motors.. the TY-143 having bigger faster ball bearing motor and the TY-141/145 having motor like TY-140/147 but with ball bearings as well.

I have both Phanteks PH-TC14PE with both new and old fans and Thermalright Silver Arrow SB-E Extreme with TY-143 fans. Yes, if you run them full speed they get kinda loud.. 1dBA louder than H100 is. ;) But there is no reason to run them full speed.. they perform the same as TY-140 or 141 600-1300rpm at same sound level and airflow.

I've used all kinds of different fans.. TY-140, TY-143, TY-147, PH-T140TS, PH-T140HP.. and there is very little difference in sound level and airflow at same rpm. I'm running TY-143 fans on my TC14-PE because I think their sound is a little nicer.. but really it's that they are red and so is my cooler. :D

Both coolers will perform the same.. up to 1300rpm.. and above that the SA SB-E Extreme will be a few degrees better if you are doing serious overclocking. Mine both idle at 700rpm@25-29c and full load is 950-1050@44-50c.. Cool and quiet.

^^Many thanks! Looks like I'll go with a red Phanteks (what was originally suggested) and should I choose to, upgrade the fans later.

Looks like I'll also be removing the heat spreaders from my vengeance ram as well.

I appreciate all the help everyone, it's hard for me to pull the trigger on things like this. Not so much a money thing, just like making good, educated and intelligent decisions on a purchase. Drives the girlfriend crazy that I have to do hours of research before I'll even buy something as simple as silverware.

Research it a 100 times and double check the sizes before you buy! Less likely to waste your hard earned money that way. So next time she complains about how long it takes to make a decision, just say i am trying my best not to waste any money darling!! AJ. :D ;)

P.S. Good choice on the Phanteks Cooler and best of luck with that. :salute:

Have a red one myself. Love it. And TY-143 fans match too.;)

Well once you have it there, just start a thread and me plus Doyll will help you to fit it properly OK! AJ. ;)

Well done on the purchase that's a good price. :)

Not as good. Noctua is optimized for quiet, the TRUE scales better with faster fans. There's also the update to the true, which is the Venomous X. There's a few Prolimatech heatsink with a similar design too.

I think the Thermalright Archon SB-E and SB-E X2 are better than either the TRUE
or the Venomous X. It has 8 heatpipes instead of 6 and more surface area to
dissipate that heat. But the SB-E's might be too big for the case mentioned as it's
really tall.
