Can I do a reformat with windows 8 upgrade?

i have a windows vista laptop that was upgraded to windows 8 (upgrade version)
if I do a reformat on the OS will I have to re-install windows vista 1st?


the issue is that I do NOT have the windows vista disk but i do have the windows 8 upgrade disk.
