I thought this was talking about Norton Internet Security Suite:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -
Tens of millions of U.S. computers are loaded with scam security software that their owners may have paid for but which only makes the machines more vulnerable, according to a new Symantec report on cybercrime.

Getting a clean uninstall of that is an art.

Holy breast cancer DOLK!!!!!!!!!!!

A clean uninstall of Norton. Pshhhhhhhaw. Format HDD. Done. ;)

As far as the thread title... this isnt as bad as the, "tell me Im bad" title I saw. I thought I somehow got permission to some secret fetish forum here at OCF... hahaha!

Has your son asked for a processor from a company called AMD?

Does your son install programs like Lunix, bonzi buddy, comet cursor? He's a hacker! No! It's not your kid surfing porn and wanting a faster rig for games (and to compensate for the bogdown from all the porn spyware, ie, bonzi buddy, comet cursor)

dropadrop may have missed the reference, but I caught it:

where have all the payphones gone? No no, you have to buy a cell phone--which itself should be the most simple item in the world- and because of our own perverse desire to live in STAR TREK we fall in love with things like the iPhone. It's a really wide phone with a touch screen and it plays games and music and has it's own operating system bla bla

Now that's a low blow to the trekies. I'm going to go drink some romulan ale now

I knew there was something going on at AMD:

If your son has requested a new "processor" from a company called "AMD", this is genuine cause for alarm. AMD is a third-world based company who make inferior, "knock-off" copies of American processor chips. They use child labor extensively in their third world sweatshops, and they deliberately disable the security features that American processor makers, such as Intel, use to prevent hacking. AMD chips are never sold in stores, and you will most likely be told that you have to order them from internet sites. Do not buy this chip! This is one request that you must refuse your son, if you are to have any hope of raising him well.

this is great...

and the rant about how technology has gotten too over complicated, think about all of history. The history of humans has been the complication of technology to make lives "easier" as the people saw fit.

You can drag all of your concerns back as far as you want to go and its still valid. Computers are not the first, and will not be the last, piece of technology to become excessively complicated over time.

Sorry Im still lost on that comment's association with this thread. I have a case of the stupids today it seems. Sorry man. :(

We're moving in the right direction. Computers were once only ran by scientists and researchers. As things continue to get more complicated, the center of gravity is moving further into the infrastructure and further away from the user. More elegant solutions and algorithms are hiding the ugly complication from the people who just want to use the tool to get things done.

This point wouldn't be complete without a car analogy - hopping in my car and driving to work is a lot more mindless now than it was with the Model T. My car is a lot more complicated than the Model T was, but its easier to use. Same with computers and technology. The heavy work is being done up front, in the background, and built into the design so the end users don't have to worry about the specifics and can just get things done quicker.

Of course, the Model T also got better fuel economy than today's average. Shameful IMHO.
