It appears change of plans at AMD, the Athlon 64 X2 5000+ (2.6GHz, 2 x 512KB) will be available for the Socket 939 after all.

Here's how it may look, click here: http://www.c627627.com/AMD/Athlon64/

...and the 2 x 1MB 2.6 dual core part which, it appears, will not be called Athlon 64 X2 5400+ but in a smart marketing move, will probably be the multiplier unlocked part called Athlon 64 FX-60.

I don't think many people wil go for the X2 5000+ if it only has 2x512KB of cache, plus it'll probably be priced higher then the X2 4800+ at $1000. Almost everyone would grab a X2 3800+ and easily clock it to X2 5000+ speeds. I hope they have some extra in that X2 5000+.

Overclockers make up a fraction of sales as usual so the 5000+ will have the hot 5000+ label, that's its strongest selling point :)

Cheapest dual core, the X2 3800+ is projected to go from $330-ish to $285-ish in 2006.

Interesting, clears up the FX59/60 confusion. You wouldn't happen to be able to put a price tag on that sucker, would ya? :D

I had heard talk about a cheaper X2 next year, but I assume it's not in the works. AMD does have an 1800MHz dual core out in the new Opteron socket 939 CPU's. I had thought there would be a regular A64 version. :(

Don't look at me, c627627. I have a $150 Winnie when just about everyone cashed there's in for a Venice. Now, everyone wants to cash in their Venice for an Opteron. All of this for a few hundred MHz? Hey, I'm an older guy with a few dollars saved and zero plastic debt, but I am not about to squander money to keep up with the Jones's. Hell, they can't even keep up with themselves. However, if a truly cheap X2 comes along I'm on it faster than my second drink.

People have been willing to pay disproportionate premiums on dual cores regardless of price/performance ratios.

"Who Are These People?" We now live in a day where a $350 CPU is called a bargain...

If that changes, we may see cheaper dual cores but that's unlikely (for now.)
Haha, interesting article.

Personally, I usually won't buy something unless it's an "insane deal". A 2.8GHz-clocked Venice @ $150 for example, or $275 for a X850XT-PE.

I think if computing competitions were split according to equipment, it would become "Who can spend the least $$$ to get into this or that class".

Too much from the point of view that the wait for dual core software will continue until after 2007: Microsoft says multicores no good without software threading
Plus we may see good deals on 939 Opteron overclockers.

As for pricing, the new FX has tended to replace the previous one at similar price/prestige points.

I also recall back in the day when Microsoft said that no computer would ever need more than 16MB of ram...lol

so, how much will the 3800+ X2 cost after a while?? And the 4400?

I really want dual core, but I'm just not up on cash.

Just curious, where did you pick up on this? and where can I too find information on price drops?

You too can find out from Ed Stroligo :)

"So if $350 was too much for the 3800+, and $330 is still too high, maybe you'll like $285 in January. "

$285 for an X2 3800+ in January sounds pretty good to me.

The really interesting thing I noticed from the link on the first post is the M2 info if you scroll down. Single cores and dual cores in April 2006. It looks like the cheapest X2 for the M2 socket will be the 4200+. Which will probably be expensive :( Also the FX chips are going to go up to 3ghz, in Q4.

It looks like the actual chips aren't going to be a whole lot different, other than having DDR2 support. Still, I wonder if waiting until April would be a good idea, if anything just to have a socket that is not about to be discontinued. The drawbacks would be 1) waiting that long :p, and 2), price. I'm sure the hardware will be darn pricy.
