You can't really blame the board for a defective socket...these Foxconn sockets are on almost all P55 boards on the market. And I'm sure some are better/worse than others.

What you need to know is that Gigabyte has been listening, and their replacement models will come equipt with LOTES sockets. ;)

The funny thing is, the LOTES sockets are also exploding

I thought to get this mobo for my new i5 build, it has features I need and it is about perfect for my needs... except one thing, 2nd PCIEX16 slot is only X4 and I want to crossfire. Now, I read that it is not a big deal and that the big hit you see somewhere between X2 and X4, but they are talking about PCIE v2.0. It it v2.0 or 1.0 on this board?

It is PCIe 2.0. Also, if you are using the 58xx series (which you should), running them at x4 electrical is 95% as effective as running them at x16, so your x16/x4 crossfire will be fine.

Gigabyte has been my board of choice for the last few years... I have the GA-P55-UD5, and is also an amazing value... Got my i860 oced to 4.2Ghz. When I run Prime95 for 30 minutes, my CPU gets up to 76c, however games and 3Dmark benchmarking, hover around 64c-66c, which is very acceptable, I'm using the the Hyper 212+ cooler, which is the best I've seen / used.

Amazing! You answered so very many of my questions with your pics.

I have a i7 860. I have a Megahalems and clips enough for two 25mm or two 38mm fans. I've even fitted a Noctua NF-P14 to the cooler.

I'm looking at the UD3/R/P boards because with my NZXT case I can point the cooler upward and know the case will let the air out.

The UD4/5/6 have a passive cooler between the socket and the PCIe board that looks like it would get in the way of any low-hanging fans on an upward-oriented Mega. You have the boards and the cooler. Does the passive cooler get in the way on the UD6? The P55A UD3R's have not arrived in the US yet.

Thanks

Any recommendations on Ram,PSU as well as case on this build?
2x2GB @ 1600MHz CL7 is good for the price...I'm not picky in terms of manufacturer...G.Skill is cheap and I've had good luck!

PSU, I'd reccommend a Corsair...with two GTX260s and the i7 860 hevily OC'd I never saw more than 700W draw at the wall...so 650W would get you by for a solid gaming rig...if you want more saftey room, go for a 750 or 850W unit. If you aren't going to get powerful GPUs, you only need a 400W unit. Check the stickies for more good info on this!

Case is all about your preferences, I have no idea what you like

Thank you! It looks like a 120mm fan will fit just fine, but a 140mm fan will not.

BTW - Do you know if there is a delay on the P55A-UD3R? The P55A-UD3P seems to be available, where the UD3R is not. Ditto -UD4P vs -UD4R. Will they try to stick us with the Fritz chip?

Hard to say bro, I wrote this article primarily for the Japan market, it's been on the shelves here for a couple weeks

Do you have a larger version of the second picture in that last batch? It looks to be the critical shot.

Sorry, something is wrong with the way the pic are being displayed...it should have linked you to the full sized images at photobucket...I've worked around the issue and added links above.

The links work fine. Thank you!

Looking at the edge of the cooler in the second pic and the sixth and seventh ones, there appears to be a little more than 1 cm from the bottom of the cooler to the top of the MB heatsink. An NF-P14 dips 1.5 cm below the bottom of the cooler.

In essence, it looks like there is not quite enough room on a GA P55A UD4+ for a Megahalems to have an NF-P14 for a pusher fan. Would you agree?

The reason I ask is that if an NF-p14 will fit, I can use a UD4+. If not, I must stick with a UD3/P/R.

I'm holding a Megahalem in my hand with an NF-P14 clipped to it. It's heavy. A second fan would add a little. It's sobering to think that a Noctua NH-D14 is 110 gm heavier, both coolers without fans. Even with the Megahalems, I'm going to have to move the completed machine very carefully. It's a wonder that MB's can hold such brutes.
