Heating Issues

Run with your case open and a room fan blowing in. If you run ok, then your problem is case air flow.

The temperature diodes are for throttling the cpu to keep it from overheating. They report temperature difference from tjmax, not absolute temperature. Intel won't say what tjmax is and many have guessed that's because it's not necessarily the same for a complete run of a chip -- temperate programs guess at it based on info that's available. BUT, you want to make sure that temp difference is >30c normal; >20c linpak (extreme cpu stability testing).

I'd grab a copy of speedfan and record the temperatures during your gaming. It can be configured to save them in a .csv file that can be opened in your favorite text editor or spreadsheet. The files are saved in speed fan's program folder (C:\Program Files\SpeedFan). Time's in seconds since midnight. You can see exactly what your temps are when things are slowing down. You can see what speed fan's assuming for tjmax and see how close to temperature throttling you are. You can also see voltages if you set them to be saved -- maybe you're having power supply problems...

Edit: tjmax is the temperature at which the CPU starts to throttle -- to keep from overheating.

Okay. Computer keeps shutting down. Watched CPU temp in the BIOS, went from 50 C to 117 C (and shut down at that temp) in about 2-4 minutes.

You need to enable what you want to go into the csv file under options. When an item is selected (temperatures, fans, etc... say temperatures Core 0) at the bottom there'll be a Logged and a checkbox. Make sure that the box is checked if you want it logged...
And log has to be enabled (log tab).
Mine looks like this:

Seconds CPU PWM Chipset Core 0 Core 1 Core 2 Core 3 GPU CPU Fan Case Fan (L) Case Fan (U) Vcc Vtt +3.3V +5V +12V
17055 36 46 50 40 42 42 38 40 1865 1160 1160 1.23 1.33 3.2 4.87 11.97
17056 38 46 50 50 45 42 39 40 1865 1160 1160 1.23 1.33 3.2 4.87 11.97
17059 42 46 50 44 46 47 42 40 1865 1162 1160 1.23 1.33 3.2 4.87 11.97

But if you're getting to 117C in the BIOS, you have a problem. I'm guessing that your heatsink isn't fully secured by the pushpins. It's tilted because one or more are loose. I had to try 4 or 5 times with some of my push pins to get them to set. You may need to remove your MB to get 'em set properly. Look at 'em from the bottom to make sure. I always build and test outside of my case 1st -- to make sure that there're no problems -- easier to fix 'em then. (Including being sure that my heatsink's on correctly before the MB gets screwed down.)

I don't think it is case air flow problems, stuck my hand it after it shut down and there was little heat in the case itself. the video card and area around the cpu felt hot

If you have good air flow, then there'll be no local hot areas. The heatsinks themselves will be warm to hot, but not the air around them.

Have you checked your push-pins?

Like others said, check the seating of your heatsink. The best way to install a heatsink is with the motherboard out of the case. This way you can eyeball it from any angle to make sure it's level and have nothing to interfere with attaching it properly.

Checked the heatsink, took it out, thermal paste was only on half of the heatsink, so I put the heatsink back in. I THINK I got all four pins down.

Now SpeedFan says it's at like 46C

You need to clean off the old thermal paste w/ 91% isopropyl alcohol, and re-apply new thermal paste to get the best contact.

I'm glad your temps are better, though.

That explains why one core was reading so damn hot.

Yep. That'll do it. As mentioned by jason, you should have cleaned the old off and replaced it (it does set and you can also get air pockets which act as an insulator), but if it's running ok -- I'd leave well enough alone!

What is your room tempratures?!?!?!?!?

I live in michigan, just moving my computer from under my desk to next to a closed window mad a huge diffrerance in my stable operating speeds.
