I'm looking to put together a cheap media-streaming/backup solution. I'd like your take on the hardware I've assembled thus far:

  • Celeron G1820 $46
  • ASRock H97 $70
  • Ballistix 2x8Gb $150
  • Corsair CX430 $50 (-$20 MIR = $30)
  • Rosewill Redbone Black case $45 (-$10 MIR = $35).
  • Storage: I'll pickup some new high capacity drives for important stuff and some cheap used drives for the unimportant data.
The main use of this rig is to backup my work and to stream media.

Questions:

  1. Do you spot anything amiss?
  2. Can I build something cheaper?
  3. Any advice you can give me/help me reshape my goals?

How many drives do you need to store? I know the HP Microservers (and the like) are popular if you don't need a ton of spinning disk. One of those should be more than enough for streaming, even if you have to encode/convert on the fly.

I was planning on slowly populating all SATA ports. For starters, a 1Tb RAID0 array would be plenty. I don't know much about canned solutions (Synology etc) but it looks like a home built solution is more flexible and cheaper (?).
