Help with starting up -FIXED-

Welcome JH258 and SkuTov!
Edit: SkuTov, I see here:
http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_summary.php?s=&u=309642

that you've turned in 3 Work Units (WU's), but none of them were finished. I believe your computer may be unstable at it's current overclocked speed. FAH will stress stability more than most benchmark programs. Can you post up in a new thread, below, and copy & paste what the FAHlog.txt file shows?

Getting started is always the hardest thing, but we try to keep it fun, too! :soda:
Adak requested I do this to check the instability of my system so here is my setup:

I have a pentium 640, overclocked slightly, running with HT enabled. I've read a number of guides on this forum and I worked out that I could use the 1 click installer to instal 2 instances of FAH onto my PC and have them both running using the 2 threds.

Beow are the two FAHlog.txt files:

How's your cooling?temp?

What are the rest of your specs? mobo, ram, etc.?

How much of an o/cexactly?

and Welcome!

The CoreStatus = 72 (114) is a file i/o error same for the other core error. try running memtest+ and see what you get

I suspect something with your memory is the culprit.I see from your log that you at least have 2 gigs.

Could be as simple as bumping the mem volts up a notch or two.

Don't worry we'll get you sorted!

Why is the client restarting so many times? Is the machine rebooting? Certainly looks like instability to me. Have you run memtest86+? If not, do so and run one pass. As quickly as your rig is crapping out, memtest should find a memory error very quickly, if there is one. Then download Orthos and run the stress cpu test or prime95 small ffts. Flunking either of those indicates a cpu issue, either overheating or undervolting.

How's your cooling?temp?

My cooling isn't the problem as far as i know, I have an arctic cooling heatsink and my CPU runs steadilly never going above 40C
What are the rest of your specs? mobo, ram, etc.?

Mobo: Lanparty 925x-t2
RAM: 4x 512 mB sticks, stock voltages, soon to be upped to next level
GPU: ATI Radeon x550, stock everything (no idea why I put that there)

How much of an o/cexactly?

3.2 Ghz to 3.6 Ghz, not much but still a noticible difference.

and Welcome!

Thanks, good to be here!

I've used Burn in test trial for mem and CPU testing, I'm going to download memtest+ and I'll put the results up here.

Yeah, I've got 2 gig of RAM, Their all the same type which is compatible with my mobo.

Could be as simple as bumping the mem volts up a notch or two.

I'm gonna try that in a moment.

Good to know, thanks for the help!

Why is the client restarting so many times? Is the machine rebooting?

No, I've been starting and stopping the clients for the first day to try and set everything up properly.

Certainly looks like instability to me. Have you run memtest86+? If not, do so and run one pass. As quickly as your rig is crapping out, memtest should find a memory error very quickly, if there is one
.

I don't think instability is a problem, My temps are all below 40C and my overclock is only just getting close to the cap for stock voltage (as far as i know). I'm going to download memtest and run some passes with upped RAM voltage and without.

Then download Orthos and run the stress cpu test or prime95 small ffts.

I have run some stress tests for my CPU to check stability, I havent had any problems.(Burn in Test)

Flunking either of those indicates a cpu issue, either overheating or undervolting.

I doubt this is the problem but I'm going to follow your suggestions anyway.

i had the same problem when i first started too. found out i downloaded the client for running SMP. since u are using a P4 with hyperthreading you will need to use the client thats meant for single cores not dual cores. hope this, have a good one!

I also run StressCPU on all of my builds.
File Description: What is StressCPU? This is a small windows program to torture-test your CPU in order to make sure that you don't have overheating problems. It will only run on SSE-equipped x86 CPUs, and it is executing a special version of the Gromacs innerloops that mixes SSE and normal assembly instructions to heat your CPU as much as possible. This program actually makes my CPU's run from 4C-6C hotter than simply running Gromacs or Prime95. It's a good heat test and it should make any system draw maximum power which will also test the stability of your powersupply.

This description came from here. If this program crashes, then you are not stable to fold, from what I have seen.

I'm running two instances of the single core client.

I've downloaded this program but it only uses half of my computers processing power, half of each thread.

I've downloaded this program but it only uses half of my computers processing power, half of each thread.

Actually on a P4 with HT enabled, it still uses 100%. It is the HT circuitry that makes Windows think you are running a dual core CPU. It is the fault of Windows that it looks like it is only using 50%. Just remember that a P4 is a single core CPU, that basically emulates a dual core.

Yeah, I do remember that.

I havent had any trouble running a number of stress tests adn I've been running folding for almost 32 hours non-stop now with no ill effects. Now all I need to do is find a way to make the sig gen stuff work...

My computers been running folding with miscelaneous other activities going on for almost 2 days straight. I think it's ok.

Perhaps it's not as unstable as it appears in the log, now that we know you were rebooting the computer almost every 15 minutes and shortly after the start of the WU in almost every case. However, the errors you are getting are related to system instability not Work Unit problems. When a batch of problematic WUs come out, everyone has problems, not just one person. You will find folding stability harder to attain running 2 instances on a 640 and more particularly with 4 sticks of ram @ a 33% OC (assuming no name ram is DDR 400).

When you are almost but not quite stable, what frequently happens is the machine will EUE one instance or the other on certain mixes of WUs. Specifically, when you get two of the tethered vessicles or tet WUs (eg: p2612,p2613, p2620, p2621) a seemingly stable machine will EUE one of them. These WUs are so ram bandwidth intensive that your production on two instances will be reduced to that of one instance due to ram bandwidth bottlenecking.

These WUs are so ram bandwidth intensive that your production on two instances will be reduced to that of one instance due to ram bandwidth bottlenecking.

I have noticed, also, that Ribo's will tend to do the same thing, where the second instance will almost instantly EUE. I think for 2 instances, you are probably better off turning off -advmethods, and saying no to large WU's. In my experiences, having both on you may be better off using just one instance, as I have been. Either that, or I am not as stable as I think I am. Although, since I have fixed my RAM timings, the system does seem to be running quite a bit smoother.

Edit: I think I have also read somewhere, that running 2 instances on an HT rig, does not really net that much more in PPD, maybe around 20% at most, since memory bandwidth bottlenecks so much. Also, since the P4's are only single core dual threaded, I think each instance might actually only use 50% of the core? I am still not sure how this whole HT thing works, aside from Windows seeing it as a dual core, even though it is single. I have heard of people with very high OC's running SMP on some of these and just barely making deadlines, but I am not sure with the WU's that really work the 4M L2 on some of the Intels out there now.

I have 3 P4 640s, the slowest of which is running 231 x 16 (3.696 GHz), 1:1, the fastest @ 241 x 16, 5:4. All fold Win SMP WUs (XP SP2) and all make the prefered deadlines on all the WUs, provided they run 24/7, don't have any down time, or any app other than IE and Outlook Express eating cpu cycles. So, SMP is viable on the P4s with 2 MB caches. You must be making more than 586 ppd, faster than 43:12 minutes/frame (slightly faster to allow time for upload), to make the prefered deadline on 1760 point WU. THe slowest rig makes 752 ppd on p2653 (33:41/frame) when dedicated to FAH and 680 ppd when in use (surfing and email). If you run Vista or XP x64, expect a 10% production hit. The prefered deadlines for p2608 and p2609, the cache intensive WUs, are the same as the final deadline. You must be faster than 57:26/frame on both to make the deadline. The slow 640 does 44:25/frame on both. You shouldn't run SMP on any rig that misses a prefered deadline. Obviously, you can't expect to make the deadlines on a P4 that runs games or video encoding for any significant amount of time. A P4c won't make all the deadlines at any OC. A P4e (1 MB cache) at a very high OC will make them if dedicated, but barely.

Running 2 instances on a HT rig nets you from 0% to 25% increase in production depending on the WUs assigned.

So a P4 530J (3.0 @ 3675) with 1 MB L2 probably won't make deadlines on SMP. Also running a 5:4 divider. I think my RAM sits at 196, while my CPU runs 245x15. Most of what this rig does besides folding, is compressing DVD files, outlook, and Firefox. It runs 24/7, but I don't want to take any chances on doing something bad for the science.

Sorry for the threadjack SkuToV.

You'd probably make all the deadlines if dedicated. You'd probably make the prefered deadline on p2653 even with some DVD compression going on. I'd worry about p2608, p2609, and p2652 though. You could try it and see, but my gut feeling is you are at the minimum spec for a dedicated machine on the current WUs.

It's not a total threadjack since we're still talking P4s. :D

Is there anything that I could use to test and make sure that my system could handle it? Something similar to StressCPU, which stresses the CPU in the same way that an SMP WU would? I would want to make sure the rig is stable before I even think about trying it. I may throw the -oneunit flag later on tonight, I don't like leaving WU's unfinished. I also may try pushing my OC a little farther, as long as I can keep it stable. I am going to take a look in the CPU database and see if others have been able to push it farther. Maybe I can get closer to 4 GHz. Also, is 2 GB enough RAM?

DOn't worry about the threadjack, I've got my 2 threads running stably and I'm gonna he turing in my work unit in a couple of days time hopefully...

Deadly,
You could run a dual Orthos on it. Orthos would have to be launched in different folders, Orthos1 and Orthos 2. Both instances of Orthos should recognize the P4 as a dual core cpu and run two instances of stress cpu automatically. That's as close as you can get to SMP, 4 threads of stress cpu. That still won't tell you if you'll make the deadline, but it should validate your cpu overclock.
