Got a gigabyte ga-ma78lm-s2 and just looked at speedfan and hwmonitor and both are reporting high on temp3 68c. Can anyone possibly tell me what it is?

I think that's a ghost reading. A lot of boards, in fact most of them, don't have three sensors, only two. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it ... :)
 
If you're worried about it take the side off the case, open your hand, and move it around above the board without touching it. If there really is something on your board running close to the boiling point of water you won't have to touch it to feel the heat. Check around the SB in particular ...
