This is a new build for a friend. He wants to edit images/videos via Corel Draw 13.

I've put this list together for him and would like some critique on my selection of components. He insists on 16GB ram. The burner is for additional backup. I've included 2 2TB HDDs for a RAID configuration as well.

Have at it. Thanks.

No gpu? Probably not the best idea for editing. And then just personal opinion but he really wants to put over $1000 of components in a $50 case?

No gpu is fine if his editing software doesn't take advantage of it. And the case is also fine. It's not the most fancy case but it'll work just fine.

Build looks good. What's with the SE models though for hdd? And what kind of raid is he planning?

And then just personal opinion but he really wants to put over $1000 of components in a $50 case?

I've put $1900 of components in a $49 case. There's no harm in it. Sure it looks worse than, say, a $300 case. But why blow the extra money on a case? Cases do not contribute to higher system performance (they do facilitate better cooling mind you). I see no point in spending more than $50-100 on a case. JM2C

I don't see spending too much over $100 either. I just like what you can get in the $99 range. And if you're gonna put that much effort to buy a nice custom pc, why not save up a little more and put it in something nice.

I just updated my image editing pc and went with the 4670k instead of the 4770k. IMO the quad should be fine for most photo editing apps. I have a GTX 650 instead of integrated graphics though. The nvidia GPU really helps out with the Adobe software, not sure about other products though.

I am also using a free 12 year old Antec full tower case that originally housed a 2.0 P4 with rdram. lol Great case, but I had to locate a 4 USB add-in panel for a 3 1/2" floppy slot. :)

He was ambivalent about the case. I chose it based upon functionality and that it would wind up in an office situation, nothing fancy was how he wanted it.

He may want a GPU later, couldn't wrap his brain around it at this time. He doesn't have much of a monitor at this time either but his brother-in-law told me that he was going to get him one pretty soon but it will be more of a surprise, so............

The HDDs are strictly for storage of images, RAID 1, no games or applications are planned to be installed upon them. Some of the images will get utilized by the business but many are of a hobby nature.

I expect this to be the first of two or three units the two of them will eventually have me splice together for them in a network setting. Maybe a server before long as well. These are some good friends that I am just doing a favor for; they have an interest in computers but no intimate experience. And after they get to doodling around with the first one, I'm thinking that my encouragement regarding Folding and Star Citizen will help them to get more interested in the hobby (one of them is a Star Trek fan from way back, plays STOR now on an OEM clunker).

The UPS folks were kind enough to drop off the various particles for my friend's image rig while I was on the road (4 weeks in a row now !); case is here as well. Some work ahead for sure. My buddy is going to have a Merry Christmas indeed. :santa:

Just about done now. Need to tidy up a few cables, button it up. Install went well after I got past the mouse issue; Win8.1 did not like my mouse, had to use my wife's, both MX Performance meeces, kinda weird.

Should hand it off this week. Fun playing with new toys.......:D

Cleaned up and delivered. After loading his Corel 15, networking and moving files, they were pretty impressed. They had been working Corel 13 off an older Vista OEM box with 2GB RAM. The highlight was my friend's stupid smirk and "wow" when we clicked on Corel and it was ready for action in under 1 second, then clicking on a six-image file which took even less time. I think he did the pee-pee dance.

I like PCs......
