my PSU cables have a lot of ugly yellow and red wires popping out of them. I want to wrap them with black electric tape to make them more pretty. Is there any reason why that would be a bad idea?

Other than creating a sticky / gooey mess in a few months...no.

Heat shrink would be better.

Hockey tape would work but vet-wrap is cheaper https://www.amazon.com/Tape-Adheren...=UTF8&qid=1471637649&sr=8-1&keywords=vet+wrap . Ive got a local store in town that sells it for a buck a roll. Its kind of like a regional version of Home Depot, but carries autoparts and fenceposts and other crap too (like vet wrap) The nice part about vet wrap is that it adheres to itself and is designed not to leave a residue (it is meant to be a disposable ace bandage for your pets)
