keeping 1-3 as 1-3 and not 3rd of january in excel?!

how do I do it? putting information into an excel spreadsheet, 'n I have stuff, one example being 1-3, 'n it auto formats it to a date, how can I stop this, I tried setting it to general and other stuff, nothing seems to work

anybody know how to?

either format the cell as "text"

or type '1-3 in the cell (with the single apstrophe before whatever you type).
