Looking for a bit of help and suggestions on a gaming build.

Rig will be for a middle schooler who doesn't generally play AAA titles, but is on an old Dell (yeah i know) I've built lots of systems in the past, but it's been 6 years or so and i'm well behind on the latest and greatest.

I don't have any parts i can re-use and my budget is $1,000. Looking to maximize his gaming on that budget and ideally something i can upgrade in a year or two.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Unfortunately GPU prices are going BONKERS right now. Everything is out of stock or jacked way up in price. It doesn't look like the price spikes are hitting the OEM systems as much so consider getting a pre-built.

A little above your budget but considering what 1070's are going for now, almost worth it to buy and resell card.

Looked for systems with 1060 6GB's but they are going $1300. Some 3GB ones around $1K but they typically are bare bones 8GB ram and no SSD. Just a bad time to buy right now.

You can get win 10 way cheeper than 89$ more like 5-10 .
Have you considered a mix of Used/new.
Like
New Case / ssd / psu
used MB/cpu/ram combo /gfx card

The BB rig with a RX 580 doesn't look too bad for $720. If you're not looking at many triple A titles, and at 1080p or less, that card will run great. And it gives you time to save for a 1070 down the road.

The 580 would prolly do just fine, the rest of the system though is pretty barebone. Throw an SSD in and your in decent shape but have to clone Windows over to it so don't loose license.

This one not bad but only 4GB 580.

You literally cannot find a decent GPU in stock for under $500 right now. I'd be looking at used market for 980 ti's or something. If so and want to build something cool, good base for you start with minus GPU.
