Hello,

The site mentions that the demos were designed for x800. Will they run on a 9800pro? What does a x800 have that a 9800pro doesn't? It's the same architecture, isn't it?

No I'm afraid not . The X800 is a souped up version of the core that makes up the 9800 Pro . Although similar in some ways it is different enough and has enough new features that the 9800 cards will not be able to do alot of what the X800 due to lack of features or speed .

There is a wrapper and a guide which allows the 9700 to 9800 series of cards to run the other 2 demos on the page but they run much slower . I have some links to it here in this thread ( near the bottom of the first page ) :

Well, just all sorts of random bugs. For example, in the Ruby demo, not all objects were pixel shaded like they should be, and some objects were pixel shaded incorrectly. The MPEG is a very nice sample if you want to see what the X800 can REALLY do, but it's cool to see an older piece of hardware (like my 9700) running something like it (albeit at slideshow speeds :D) :)

What exactly are those features? thanks....

From memory :

Pixelshader 2.0b
The ability to run much longer pixelshader and vertex shader programs
The ability to use Pixelshaders to speed up not only avi video streams but also Mpeg4 video
The ability to easily add extra detail to textures via a technique called 3DC or normal mapping .
An advanced anisotropic filtering algorithm .
A better occlusion culling system than that on the 9700 and 9800 series .

More features and full explanations can be found here :
