Today I went to frys with my friend to shop for a new rig. The specification are as below:

Gigabyte EP45-U3P rev 1.6 motherboard
Q9550 E0 stepping
4gb (2x2gb) PC8500 Patriot viper RAM
old 250gb IDE hard drive from his old computer
old 52x IDE CD ROM drive from his old computer
Thermaltake CL-p0024 tower (same as mine except 92mm antec fan)
Antec three hundred case (same as mine)
650watt Antec 80plus power supply
896mb PNY GTX260 216SP 55nm GPU
23in LG 1920x1080P LCD Monitor

All cables are hidden at the back of the case to ensure good airflow and I apply a thin layer of AS5...

I started with 2.83ghz stock, installed windows xp 64 bit and all software, then proceed with 400x8.5. Here are my settings below:

CPU Vcore = 1.25v
CPU VTT = 1.2v
CPU PLL = 1.5v
NB MCH = 1.3v
RAM = 2.1v 5-5-5-15 @ 1066mhz

So the next step I did is open OCCT and start the regular test. I notice the idling temperature were 43/40/38/39C, and then jump all the way to 67/65/66/66C at 100% CPU usage. When I tried linpack it will just jump all the way to 80C+ and then the test stopped... Is that normal for quad core? Me and my friend both use the same cooler and same thermal paste except his antec fan spin at 2000RPM whereas mine is only at 1700RPM. I was hoping to get his Q9550 to 3.8-4.0ghz range, looks like it's not going to be easy. :bang head

Wrong heatsink install, too much paste.

If not, check for CPU and heatsink flatness, maybe you need to lapp both or one. My E5200 seemed flat with a flat edge, but showed a concave IHF when i lapped it.

The center is where the sandpaper isnt tuching ...

What's the VID of your chip, using Real Temp--> "Settings" page--> Max Core VID? And without knowing the ambient / MB temp. while running OCCT / Prime, 67/65/66/66C at 100% load isn't bad at all on air w/ a quad. It's also normal for LinPack / LinX to heat up the CPU to 15 - 20C higher than OCCT / Prime.

His Q9550 VID is 1.1625v . The ambient temperature is about 77F and the computer sit on a large table with nothing blocking the air passage. I don't know what is the motherboard temperature, but I do know the system temperature is about 40C idle and 47C at full load. My E8500 comes with 1.25v for VID  and I overclocked it to 4.2ghz @ 1.312v. My idle temperature is like 31/38c and 58/57c OCCT, 62/60c orthos small FFT and 73/72c OCCT linpack 64bit enabled at 77F ambient temperature.

It's a brand new CPU he just got it yesterday, so I don't want to lap it in case it doesn't overclock as well as I expected. What is your idle and full load temperature at 3.825ghz?

I will post some screen shots later this weekend when he's off work.

At 400 x 8.5 = 3.4 GHz (570 MHz OC) w/ a 1.1625 VID E0 quad, you probably don't need to supply 1.25 Vcore (almost a .1v increase) for that clock. You could probably reach that speed w/ only the VID supplied or just slightly higher (no more than about 1.18v - 1.20v max).

ROOM ~20
Idle ~26
Load ~45
Vcore 1.206 under load

The comp is on my desk. Good airflow but im WCed ...

My temps on air were exactly the same. I kept it at 3.8 Ghz, and it was idling at 40C and gaming at 55C, but any 100% load would make it go all the way to 70C. That was with ~75F ambient temp too.

I am pretty sure you can game on 4.0 GHz on air, but it will get too hot during 100% load.

The stock cooler ROCKS on the CPU.

If you play "older" games like TF2 and posibly many others ( thats the one ive noticed this ), youll see that 1 core is 100% loaded and the others are 20-30% loaded. These "old" games are made for 1 core so its loading one core ...

Temps look like this : 45-31-32-31 ( im WCed and 45 is high for me )

Just be sure not to run @ 70°c while gaming ... ! i would'nt run a CPU @ 70+ for hours ...

I would and so should anyone else. That is the "popular" limit. You are being a bit conservative saying not to run 70C while gaming. HOWEVER, if you game at 70C your temps for Prime and anything else (like F@H) that used all 4 cores would be 10C+ more which I WOULDNT recommend. ;)

Im still trying to figure out why you posted your w/c temps in for this guy on air as a comparison! :bday:

He asked for my temps ....

I just want to be sure he is not going to fry his Q9550 ... if he is gaming in the 70c .... its bad at my opinion !
