Basic question as i cant find much info. Judging by what ive done so far, it seems that it is only a Software raid.

What i'm trying to do is setup 2x 3TB hard drives for storage (they are not the boot drives, i have a separate 250gb for the OS and such) in a Raid 1 array (mirror). I set it up in Bios, but when i look in Ubuntu, it shows them as separate drives.

Is this because the raid is software driven and not hardware driven? Or am i missing a step? (this is my first time setting up a RAID array)

A Raid through Intel chipset is usually called a "fake RAID" as it's not entirely software nor hardware, but chipset related. Google properly for disambiguation.
