Painting a Case

I have an old case I am getting ready to heavily mod. It is an ugly off-white color right now and I want to paint it black. Would a regular spray paint look like **** for this. What kind of paint should I be looking to get. And do I need to use a primer for spray paint on metal that has some paint already?
