PC2100 Level 2 better than PC2700?

force26 & Penguin,
Please help.
I have this unlocked XP1700 and trying to figure out why I unlocked it.
Someone told me to lower my multiplier to 8 and set the divider to 5.
Then I was told to bump the the FSB up by 5, starting with 166.
I did that and my FSB is now 195. I did relax the RAM timing to 2.5 before starting this mission. I'm probably about to blow something up, video, audio, nic but, I guess that will teach me something. :eh?:

I'm going to reboot and try the FSB at 200.

The question is what do I try next?

The board should be stable. Raise the multiplier(Very slowly). The max you can get out of a 200FSB is 2.9GHz,(Very doubtful unless good cooling is involved, i.e. Water or Vapo-Chill). Is your memory PC2100, PC2700, or PC3200?

Thanks Penguin,
You seem to change your Avatar as often as my girlfriend changes her panties!

Here is another email from the Mushk!

Totally serious about the Level 2 out performing the 2700....THe Level 2 should have no problem at the PC3000 range : )

I tried some new stuff just now. I changed my RAM timings to the MOST aggressive settings. C2, 1T, etc.
I changed my multiplier to 9 and my FSB to 185.
I think I am getting close to my sweet spot with this AMD 1700 that I unlocked.
My Vcore is at 1.85 and my RAM is at default/stock voltage.
I don't know that tweaking much more, volt modding, or water cooling will be worth the expense as far as performance goes.
I gotta admit that learning about ocing and tweaking is a fun hobby.
And I'll probably buy that $500 water cooler next month!
I'm running a bunch of BMs and tweaking a little bit more.
Then I'll set up prime95 and go to bed.

Thanks for your help and recommendations!

Just noticed the P4 in your sig. I'm wondering why I am investing all this time and effort into making my AMD system perform as well as yours. I guess I could have bought the Intel from the get go?

buckhunter,

That is one heck of an overclock :D I agree with Penguin as to the method to determining the sweet spot. Remember that overall RAM speed is almost always more important that timing in terms of memory bandwidth performance. For example, 8.5*200 (1700MHz) at 2.5-3-3 is probably going to be faster than 9*190 (1710MHz) at 2-2-2 in terms of memory bandwidth performance.

Anyway, I am anxious to hear what speed you end up at. Post some benchmarks when you get a chance!

<-------The Immortal, Lynrd Skynrd!

On the RAM side, I screwed up on the numbers, the High Perf 2100 goes to PC3200@CAS 2-3-3 1T, which is faster than currently available DDR400 sticks. On my sig, alot of benchmarks are weighted heavily on memory and motherboard bandwith. With this combo @720 QDR FSB,(4 data pipesx180), that would be 5.76GB/s bandwith. AMD's are great processors. I just got through reading a PC World Article in which they BM'd the Palamino 2100 against an Intel 2.53 using their Worldbench 4, more info here, which uses Adobe Photoshop 5.0, Corel Photo-Paint 8, Intuit Quicken Deluxe 99, Lotus 1-2-3 r9, Lotus Word Pro 9, Microsoft Access 2000, Microsoft Excel 2000, Microsoft PowerPoint 2000, Microsoft Word 2000, Netscape Communicator 4.73, and Visio 5.0 Standard Edition to test a system's real world performance, in which the Intel won by a measly 2 points. Just compare the prices: $180 for an XP2100+, $620 for a 2.53 P4. Glad I could help.
