Since they have now been released I figured it is time to open up a thread for owners of AMD FX "Piledriver" (Vishera) CPU's.

I sold my previous FX-8150 back in June but I kept my old motherboard waiting for the new update from AMD. So earlier today I stopped by my local Micro Center and picked one up.

My old 8150 had a stock P-State (VID) of (18x @1.287v) for 3.6GHz where my new 8350 has a stock P-state (VID) of (20x @1.375v) for 4.0GHz. It will be interesting to see how well these new chips can clock vs. how easy/hard they are going to be to keep cool and if its better to have a "high leak" or "low leak" sample.

I have an 8320 inbound with a friday ETA. Will report in!

Hmmmm, I'm tossing up between buying an 8320 or a microphone pre amp.....

It seems that my chip needs ~1.4v (load) for 4.5GHz... I let it "chrunch" WCG last night while I was sleeping.

Pushed it a little higher this afternoon up tp 4.7Ghz Prime large FFT with vcore set to ~1.468v (LLC/75%).

IMC testing...

I can't seem to set CR1 in BIOS @ 2400MHz on my CHVF?? It always comes up CR2 even when set to CR1. It will however set to CR1 using the 1600 or 1866 speeds.

Ok well I got my 8320 today and dropped it into my mobo with some new RAM and didn't clear my settings first so I could compare temps. The settings are way out of wack but this was a decent baseline test. Pump at 3/4 speed, fans at 1/2 speed 15 mins P95 + kombustor topping out at 42C @ 4ghz.

After a quick overclock im at 4.4, though it doesn't seem completely stable at 1.5v after 13 mins core dropped out in P95.

I bumped the vCore 1 notch and it seems to be good and stable at this speed. Ill spend some time clocking it after my loop has bleed off and the TIM settles some.

Ok well I had a bit of free time today so I took a jab at the 8320. Im at 4.84Ghz currently and have been using 3dMark Vantage as a stability test, also to compare performance.

The comparison is from the best 3d Vantage CPU score I achieved with my 8120 VS 3 runs I made today. The RAM, motherboard, and PSU is the same, across all tests. SSD and waterblock have changed since the 8120 was recorded.

As you can see the 8320 handily beats the score from my 8120 @ 4.6G while running at 4.4G not a bad start. From here I bumped the multiplier 1 between the next two runs. The 4.8G run did require 2 bumps in vCore to pass, but I also reduced the LLC setting one notch so the total vCore change was +0.02v @ load.

Interestingly the graphics score scaled with the CPU speed on the 8320, it was minor, but worthwhile @ 773 points.

Total change in CPU score(8320): 1,910
Total CPU score gain from 8120: 2,621

Total change in 3dMark score(8320): 1,002

Would two server type cpu's (65w headless quad zeon 3.2's ~$250ea) run just about everything, even games better? Or is that just higher maintenance? Or would gaming require a std single cpu setup? Ill informed. As much as I want the fastest (q.v. my specs), I know it can only go faster next year.

Not particularly. That might provide better multithread performance in some heavy threaded loads than one of these chips. In gaming though generally you want the fastest core speeds you can get. Most server boards dont have to much going for them by way of x16 slots so that can be a big limitation also.

Am i reading that right? 4.7Ghz on an air cooler (53c Cores and 62c CPU)

That looks good, whats the max these CPU's can handle, is it still 55c on the cores?

I have actually had very few crashes even when pushing my chip to 5Ghz, without enough vCore you get errors and threads stall but the system manages to stay alive. I havent been watching to closely at my temps sofar but Im pretty sure at 5Ghz I was pushing 60+.

Ok :) i'm sizing them up, i don't want to go rushing into buying one, so far so good....

It was cooler this evening... So I left the screen door open to my basement computer room. (Ambient temp ~18.3C) 4.875GHz DDR3-2400 with vcore set to 1.475v LLC 75%: ~2.5hrs AIDA Stress test on an open air bench using TR Archon with one 140MM fan:

I think if it did 4.7 stable inside a case with room temps of 22c on a reasonably good air cooler i'd be quite happy with that.

This is what I managed so far if you haven't read my other post my ambient temps were 24c at the time of test.

Thats on a custom watter cooler?

5Ghz and good temps. that's great :) it looks like a better clocker than the FX-8150, and by a good amount :) the FX-8150 would melt the watter block at 5Ghz.

Yes Frakk it's the cooler in my sig. I'm hoping I'll find time to try for 5 Monday.

Your chip is looking good Mandrake.

How much CPU/NB are you running? Bumping anything else besides vcore? Or are you running other voltages default or perhaps auto?

CPU/NB 1.34 both at 2307
CPU LLC extreme
CPU/NB LLC extreme
CPU Current at 140%
CPU/Nb at 130%
CPU Voltage Freq fixed at 400
All other voltages are set manually at stock
I did drop my dram to 1333 from 1600 but with the fsb it was running at 766 10,10,10,27,37 1.5v
