PS3 plays japanese PS2 games?

I'm considering buying a PS3 to kill two birds with one stone as opposed to buying a Japanese PS2 to play imports. I know the PS3 has no region limitation, but will this work with PS2 games? I really hope so. I want KH2 Final Mix...and Beatmania IIDX Distorted...

Only PS3 games are region free. Meaning DVDs, PS2 games, and Blu-Ray movies must all be the same region as the system.

Note: Blu-Ray region coding specifies USA and Japan are in the same region.

Aw, that's tragic. : / Maybe I should buy a Japanese PS3! O.O! Once Guitar Hero 3/Rock Band comes out I wont need to play US PS2 games...and I'll have both JPN and US PS3 compatibility. *stalks Playasia*
