Question Regarding Windows 7 Back-Up

As you can below on my rig I have a Crucial 128GB M4 SSD and a Seagate 500GB SATA-III HDD I was considering doing a back-up of my main partition on the SSD to the 500GB. In the past when I have tried to restore a back-up on my old rig I would get an error saying it couldn't recover the back-up or something along those lines.

My question how reliable is the back up software or is there a free cloning app that will be better and can be easily recovered from.

I've imaged installs from SSDs to HDDs on multiple systems using the built-in Windows backup utility, and never had any issues w/ restoring them.
