How many SATA drives will this motherboard support? It lists 6 SATA ports (only 2 at SATA 3 speed) and 8 SAS2 ports. The picture shows what looks like 8 blue SATA ports in addition to the 2 white and 4 black SATA ports. Can SATA drives be plugged directly into the SAS2 ports?

Second question ... In this and another page for another LGA 1150 server MB, Newegg shows "recommendations" for LGA 1151 processors. What's up with that?

Thanks!

NB: Not sure if this should be here or in STORAGE.

The blue ones are a type of SAS port, which is the same pinout as SATA. SAS is compatible with SATA, so you can plug a SATA drive into them no problem. It would support 8+4+2=14 SATA drives assuming all can be used simultaneously.

Be careful, SAS and SAS2 is Serial-Attached SCSI drives
SATA is Serial AT Attachment IDE drives
The number of pins on the connectors may be the same, the way the drives talk to the MB is not the same. Also, the controller for SAS drives is on the MB, the controller for SATA drives is on the drive. See pics below.

As thideras stated, you can use a SATA drive on a SAS port. You cannot use a SAS drive on a SATA port.

I covered this in my post. SATA drives will work on SAS. SAS drives will not work on SATA.
