Techspot comparison of DDR4 vs. DDR5 in gaming benches

They spout some nonsense at times and they overpaid for the 4000 modules to make that statement. This is a long term problem I have with their channel. Testing is ok, but they can come to really whacky conclusions.

Looking at one major UK seller:

Price per 16GB module at each speed in GBP. I took lowest of 1x16GB or half of 2x16GB kits. I also looked at DDR4 8GB modules but basically they're more expensive per capacity. 3200 was fractionally cheaper at 8GB but not significantly so. Thankfully DDR5 8GB modules don't exist outside of low end offerings as their performance will likely suck.

In DDR4 there is basically little difference in price up to 3600. The jump to 4000 comes at a premium.
In DDR5 it seems pretty flat up to 6000, then generally goes up with speed beyond that. I note that 6000 seems to be the most common offering, and without counting it looked like there were more options at 6000 than all higher DDR5 speeds combined.

At least for this seller, DDR4 is generally much cheaper than DDR5. DDR4 4000 is comparable to DDR5 6000 here.
 
I believe your real $ increases are past that 6400 mark, give or take a bit. 5600 used to be the platform limit, but that's now 6000. Most are going a few hundred MHz above the base spec and we're seeing maturation of ddr5 so availability and pricing should continue its trend (though higher capacity units throw a wrench in that a bit).
 
5600 is still the highest official speed on consumer CPUs isn't it? Maybe it depends on sales at a given time but in the past I didn't think there was much price difference between 6000 and 6400. Maybe I didn't find the cheapest 6000 kit at the time.

There isn't a significant difference between 6-6.4k here either.

5600 Maybe for Intel, I don't' know, don't use the platform but with Zen 4, official limit is 5200. Although AMD use to promote 6000 as the "sweet spot", its probably more now.... However when you drill down into the bios on current AM5 platforms, one gets a warning notice of voiding warranty with anything above the 5200 supported limit when OC past this limit. Bit of a contradiction isn't it for a company to claim a higher speed is the sweet spot yet it voids warranty!
 
I did say highest for any consumer CPU, not all CPUs. The supported vs sweet spot thing was also in DDR4, where Zen 3 CPUs supported 3200 officially but they said the sweet spot was 3600.

I hear ya, but that's normal (intel and amd), really. There's a defined maximum for the platform, and going past that voids the warranty (technically) for said processor (not the ram kit). Been this way for generations now, yep.

Yes, so this is why I lapped my 7600X cause' before I was OC the IMC past 5200 but with 1:1 anyway, so what have I got to loose with warranty concerns? ;)
