Yup, the transparency is just from a theme. It's a "fake" type of transparency used by a lot of K applications that just overlays the correct area of the background over the areas that are transparent. Konsole uses the same kind of thing.
 
well thats no good...are there any alternatives to gkrellm that would be acceptable in a gnome environment?

Really? Could you or someone else expalin why? I have read the apt how to and noticed nothing there that states I should, and have been dist-upgrading daily for many months in X and have had no issues. hmmmm?
