That's a negative. Stock heatsink on many systems can barely keep up with stock speeds at maximum stress. Wait for Thermalright to overclock and note that with it you may go toward 4 GHz whereas 3.6 you might even accomplish with a cheaper aftermarket heatsink.

Thermalright is better for $8 more. When I said other heatsinks, I was just thinking maybe you can buy a significantly cheaper one if you want to go half a GHz lower than expected OC as things go...

I hope the eBay stuff is real. Our own Silversinksam once caught an official company selling thermal compound without any silver in it. http://www.overclockers.com/index.p...=article&id=3740&catid=52:cooling&Itemid=4257 So you never know with the unofficial sources for paste...
 
Thanks! What do you mean by "TRUE". btw, a good friend is a grad bio major. LOTS of access. lol. I'll drop by the lab on our campus and run the tests on the paste I buy. Ill be sure to post the results if I find that it does not contain the appropriate silver composition. ...let's pray it does.
 
Ha ha. No need to do that, we're just proud of Silversinksam and I used the opportunity to remind people of that. Small tube is cheap, just simply buy it from the same place you buy the heatsink, so the shipping should be free on it with the heatsink and Thermalright is only sold at authorized places which are usually overclockers stores.


Thermalright TRUE used to be out for other CPUs before i7 came out, the TRUE version for the i7 with supporting stuff is Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme RT 1366

I bought a new i7 system and I can't wait to receive it, damn couriers.
MB ---------- Asus rampage 2 GENE
CPU --------- i7 920
RAM --------- 6Gig Corsair Dominator 1600Mhz 8-8-8-24 1.65v
GPU---------- Sapphire HD4890 Atomic

I'm a little new to OC but this tread helped a lot.

At first I wanted to buy 1333mhz ram but after I bought the more expensive ram I read this article on tom's hardware

It sucks that the increased bandwidth doesn't make a very noticeable performance increase.

The question now is: Is it better to overclock the QPI to run the Ram at 1600Mhz and beyond or to run it at tighter timings?
 
After finding out what your CPU can do, start tinkering with RAM settings.

For me setting the [DRAM Frequency] higher, even at (really) high timings was the way to go as the extensive tests showed in posts #23, #24 and #25 of this thread.

At least it's not a total waste of money, but the performance increase is always a welcome. If I built my system I'll post the results.
I'll try to push the Ram past 1600Mhz, maybe 2000Mhz if it's possible. My motherboard support 2000Mhz, so i'll give it a try.

Alternative to thermalright?

Built the machine. Runs like a dream! Crysis is wow....I love the i7.

I am having trouble installing the ASUS utilities on win 7 RC. I can install PC Probe but when i run the program nothing happens. I am running it in vista compatibility with admin privileges. The other programs like turbo V don't work at all. Furthermore, I can't even get the ASUS Expressgate unzipped!

These will get resolved in time I guess. Anyway I called every local store and nobody carries thermalright! What the heck? Is there a good alternative. I am only trying to achieve a 24/7 stable 3.6Ghz.
 
What is your location? Thermalright heatsinks are usually only carried by select authorized dealers, not even newegg or zipzoomfly have them. Check the links we posted above or better yet thermalright.com for links to where it is sold.

I myself was interested in a lower priced option should there ever be a need for one for someone else. Why don't you head on over to the cooling section and ask or see who the (considerably) lowerpriced champ is...

The thing about Thermalright TRUE is that it is so good, that it makes no sense when comparing it to slightly less expensive heatsink. But it is priced up, so maybe there is something considerably cheaper for moderate overclocks.

On the other hand, that i7 sure can run hotter than older chips...
 
Final OC

Well I decided on the thermalright TRUE. :) It's very nice. I was annoyed I had to disassemble the computer I had just built in order to install the mounting bracket, but I got over it real quick. ;) It runs 17C cooler under max load with no OC. WOW!

Here is what I did to get my 3.6GHz:

Cpu Controller on Manual
Speed Step & turbo boost Disabled
BCLK= 180
Multiplier= 20
VCore= 1.25V
VDRAM= 1.64V
Everything else is on auto

This gave me my 3.6GHz. I ran Prime95 for 2 hours with large FFTs and with small FFTs for 8 hours. Ill do the 24 hour test of small ffts soon as well as the blend. But I don't expect any memory problems as I downclocked memory to 1443MHz from 1600. Temperatures never exceeded 80C in any test. :)

I may eventually do the 3.8GHz, but for right now I am satisfied with my 3.6. Ill jump VCore up to 1.3 to start- and put BCLK at 190. I dont think it will be all that harmful in temperatures as my computer will rarely be under that max load.

P.S It looks like I have a high idle temp, but actually I just took a snap shot a second after stopping prime95's 8 hour run.

I found video rendering when combined with other activities to be excellent for testing real life stability.

After editing video and starting the rendering process, aggressively doing other things again crashed my system.

I increased CPU voltage to 1.45 and needless to say, every time I video render from now on, I'll try to crash my system doing other aggressive things simultaneously....

First of all, good job! Very nice numbers on your OC. I'm currently looking forward on getting the same results on my next project for my i7. This thread will be very helpful for me since I have the same board you use.
 
Not sure a SSD would do a ton to help...

It did. I just installed my first Solid State Drive. Yes, yes, yes. Boot times were cut by as much as 75%, most applications open instantaneously now. A decent SSD was key to making the most out of my i7 system.


What I would like to find out is why some larger applications take two seconds to load? There's one or two that take 3, maybe even :eek: four seconds!? :)


Would raiding SSDs reduce that?
