Which graphics card... 6800/x800 or 7800gs/x1800xt

Hi,

Firstly apologies for another "which should I buy" thread….

My system is : Opteron 144 @ 2800MHz, 2 gig DDR ram, Asrock dual Sata, Radeon 9800 pro.

I've been looking at upgrading the graphics card for a while, but can't decide on what do, initially I was looking at getting a nividia 6800gs or powercooler x800 (16 pipes), which are currently about 125 pounds.

But I've seen I can get a 7800gs or x1800xt (both 256 meg) for about 200 pounds.

Firstly, how much of a difference is there between the 6800/x800 and the later 7800/x1800.

Secondly, would I be better waiting a month or two hoping for the prices of the 7800/x1800 cards to significantly fall?

Oh, and if it makes any difference, I've got an lcd monitor, so want to play games at 1280x1024.

For £125.00 your best option is GTO2. Hopefull you can get an unlockable one and OC to a X850XT PE. Even if you don't get an unlockable one, it can overclock to be faster than the X800XL.

In the US, the X850XT price has dropped lower than the GTO2 so you could wait to see if the price drops on this card next month.
